The school I teach at is small. It's in a mountain village, in a rather depopulated area of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines; the nearest town is about 80 km far.
This year the pupils are few (only 26). There are two classes; one is a mixed-level class (‘pluriclasse’) where 6th and 7th grade students are together.
I can meet my collegues only once or twice a week, as they work also in other schools. They often come and go and only the Maths and English teachers and I are permanent members of the staff.

In our school there are three classrooms, all with an interactive whiteboard; we have at our disposal some laptops, some personal computers and two tablets; there is also a good Internet connectivity. That helps us to go beyond our geographical isolation.

I agree with the sentence “space sciences embody a unique combination of science, technology and culture and serve as vehicle for capturing the imagination of young people.” Last year we proposed to our 8th grade students a multi-disciplinary project about space, and it has been a very positive, motivating and engaging experience. I noticed that our pupils’ interest for this topic was authentic and I think that their wonder and curiosity won’t be only temporary.

I also know that Space is linked to everyday life in multiple ways and that, at school, is rather easy to find links between this mainly scientific topic and other subjects. As a teacher of Italian Language and Literature I can submit to students Science Fiction stories and novels, poems inspired by starry skies, mythology; students can improve their language skills reading, writing and talking about these topics. As a History teacher I can introduce the history of ideas about the nature of the universe, or I can examine with student the history of Space exploration, realizing also timelines.

According to me, the most interesting idea of this module, is the idea of ‘global citizenship’ : approaching these themes students could understand how our planet is a fragile and to be protected“ pale blue dot”; how, looking Earth from Space, there are no frontiers; we all belong to the same mankind and must cooperate. That could be an antidote to intolerance.

I'm a Language and Literature teacher, not a Science teacher. Nevertheless, I think that - whatever subject you teach - it is better to actively involve students in the learning process. This is also a key idea in "Nuove Indicazioni per il curricolo - 2012" (Italian National Guidelines for the Curriculum).
In my school, the traditional teaching style, based almost exclusevily on teachers' lectures, is still very common, and many collegaues are diffident about a different approache.
I'm trying to improve my teaching practice, and probably some characteristics of the Inquiry Based Education are already part of my teaching style. This is the result of my initial self-reflection activity : "Towards a student-centered approach. Your teaching style is towards a student-centered approach. Your classes include both lecturing and discussion. During activities, students have several degrees of freedom and you try to cover both content and the development of students’ skills."

It is not enough (alas, it's true...).
So
4) Allow students to do a lot of research on facts using the Internet: they will learn research skills of great value.
5) Improve critical thinking: evaluating the accuracy of online content is very important in the 21st century eduction.
6) Teach responsibility and ethics in online behavior.
7) Technology is very powerful in promoting and developing collaboration among students (and teachers)
8) Use technology for designing creativity: students can create different types of digital content (written, audiovisual, music, etc.).

Some barriers in learning are effective and very clear to me (disabilities, ethnic issues) but I don't pay a great attention to the socio-economic background of my students: I simply see individuals, whatever is the social enviroment they come from. But viewing the video I' realized that, yes, having less than 50 books in your house could be a disadvantage (and having more could be a privilege)...
