For centuries, the Dalits were at the bottom of the Hindu caste system. Caste-based discrimination has been outlawed and some Dalits have risen to high political posts. But prejudice is still pervasive against the nearly 300 million strong community. The Dalit Movement aims to dismantle the caste system and empower the Dalit community by advocating for social, economic, and political equality and justice.

In India, the 'casual violence of the other' is a stark reality faced by the Dalit community. Dalits, historically marginalized by the caste system, endure everyday discrimination and violence simply because of their caste identity. From being denied access to public spaces to facing brutal attacks, Dalits experience systemic oppression that perpetuates their social exclusion. In a survey conducted by the NCDHR, it was found that on average, there is a crime committed against a Dalit every 18 minutes in India. These crimes range from verbal abuse and social ostracization to physical violence and even murder.
