15/04/2014, at 9pm: The sewol ferry departed from Incheon heading towards Jeju Island. It carried a total of 476 people including 325 students, 14 teachers, 29crew members and 100 or so other passengers. They also carried a mix of cargo: trucks, cars and containers which makes it triple the legal weight limit. At that time there was only one offical captain called Captain Lee Joo-seok

16/04/2014 at 8.20 am, the auto pilot has been switched off and manual steering has been switched on, the ones steering were Third Mate Park Han-gyeol ( only had six months of experience on the job and sewol ferry is the first time steering a boat) and Helsmen Cho Jun-ki (physically opertaed the sterring wheel under the oders of the Third Mate)

8.49 am, Helsmen manually steer the ship 15 degrees to the left (there is a known fact that all sewol members must not steer this particular vessel more than 5 degree in any direction due to the amount of cargo they were bringing adding the fact that all the cargo isnt tied down). Due to this, the ship was rolling (moving from side to side) trying to find balance but ultimately leaned towards the left. This wouldn’t have been a problem if there was ballast water on the ship to help stable as they were supposed to be the centre of gravity but there wasn’t. With this, the boat slowly fills up with seawater and the engine of the boat is cut, the off-duty captain rushes to the port to figure out what was happening at that moment.

By around 9:30 AM, the first Korea Coast Guard (KCG) patrol boat arrived at the scene, focusing mainly on rescuing people already in the water or on the deck, including the captain and crew. Despite the fact that the ferry was still above water and tilted, no attempt was made to enter the ship and help passengers trapped inside. Between 9:30 and 10:00 AM, helicopters from the Coast Guard and fire department also arrived and airlifted a small number of people from the deck, but again, no coordinated effort was made to evacuate those stuck below. By 11:00 AM, the ferry was almost completely on its side, and passengers inside were texting loved ones that water was flooding in. At 11:18 AM, the ferry made its final distress call before becoming fully submerged around 11:30 AM. It wasn’t until after noon that the South Korean Navy and special forces divers arrived, but by then, it was too late, the ferry had sunk, and the operation shifted from rescue to body recovery. Despite the presence of multiple agencies including the Coast Guard, Navy, Fire Department, and civilian boats: poor coordination, delayed response, and a lack of decisive action meant that more than 300 people died while rescuers were on the scene and the ship was still afloat.

-304 people died including more than half of the high school students, only 172 people survived. Mostly those who survived are those who disobeyed orders and escaped earlier on.

Trails, sentencing and backlash

Captain Lee Joon-seok was sentenced to life in prison for murder through gross negligence.

Other crew members received 5-30 years of sentences

This incident also exposed deep flaws in South Korea’s maritime safety standards, regulatory oversight and crisis response systems.
