I use BYOD regularly in my classes. This includes as a 'pre-assessment' to gauge students' awareness of key terms/topics that we will be covering. I do this using tools such as Mentimeter which provide live results that I can show on screen at the front of the class. I also set research tasks which students can do on phones/tablets/devices – often in short groupwork activities.

Giving students a list of relevant resources, they can use their devices to work (individually or in groups) to find accurate information. For example, I set a task in which students are asked to find correct information on copyright holders for the two sets of copyrights attached to a given piece of music (composition rights and recording rights). I give a list of resources including 'entry level' (Wikipedia, YouTube) and more advanced/industry tools (PRS database, US Copyright Office). Then we feedback as a class and consider the value of different resources.

One example of how I use Mentimeter is in a lecture on music streaming platforms. I begin with a short poll asking students what platforms they use, and whether they use the 'free' (ad-supported) or paid tiers. This gives me a starting point for students' own experiences, but also can be a prompt for class discussion questions before the lecture content begins.
