Stalin was not willing to surrender his land to the Germans, so he forbade his soldiers to retreat. German firebombs set the city on fire and made most of the city into rubble. This street-by-street fighting lasted about 2 months, until the Soviets surrounded the German troops until winter came. This winter froze and starved the German force, even some men were losing their fingers from the cold. As a result, the Germans surrendered to the Soviets. After the battle, Hitler had a morning day, not for the fact that many soldiers died, but for the shame he felt.
