Nowadays lots of New Zealand inhabitants including the Maori people are Christian. Still, before any influence from outside culture their religion was centrally based on animism (They believe that both inanimate and animate objects have some special meaning). The Maori believe in many different Gods, usually laced with things in the natural world which create our world. Spiritual power comes from Mana, which is earned with big acts that have an impact on their life and are recognized. Mana is protected by Tapu - which basically restricts the Maori people from doing bad things in order to keep your Mana. If you violate Tapu then you are usually deeply punished, such as death.

The Maori people are acknowledged in New Zealand and are supported in many ways, but they still face many kinds of discrimination and inequality. The Maori people experience very high rates of poverty compared to regular civilians in poverty, domestic abuse, illness and suicide. It is claimed to have been getting better but the issue still stands. According to the Good Shepherd NZ website, one in two (55%) Maori women experiences physical and emotional abuse in their lives.
