The idea that any method other than violence and complete political restruction can be used as an effective way to make changes in their society and alter perceptions of outsiders of them is an interesting stance to take in contrast with most of our other readings and films which seem to think that the idea of using means such as music and culture in a revolutionary manner is naive and can be too easily co-opted by the system and not help anyone. There was a noticeable change in this favela that did help people.
-JM

1. The part of the film where the American filmmaking crew is very present is during the beginning when talking to a favela resident where who the filmmakers were filming was answering honestly to their questions even if it was unsafe.
2. The film to me feels like it was made for the other, like in America or the UK. With the context of the Ford Foundation giving the grant to continue Afroreggae's efforts and that it was viewed by an audience of the other when it was created.

The problem with having one individual being the face of a movement. - EL

What we saw in the film, when Anderson almost lost his life, due to the neck injury. Members of the Afro Reggae movement feared that once he past away no one will be able to continue the movement. When it comes to a movements survival having the hope and dream relied on one person, makes it easier for it to dissolve if god forbid the one person passes away. For a movement to survive we need multiple strong leaders to pass the lesson and ideas of the movement, so if we lose one the movement still survives.
