(The purpose of the text is to bring light on humanities concept of life. It is trying to show us that we are putting our care and appreciation into objects and the materialistic side of our lives rather than the people. It intents that you wake up from this material haze when you see this ad or at least accept that we have a problem when it comes to our priorities. The writer clearly agrees with the fact that we have a problem and he is trying to show us his interpretation of how this new material world is affecting us. The message it quite obvious even if it isn’t spelled out for us. However with careful inspection we gain a stereotypical understanding of the advertisement as the women are “more interested in purses” and kids are “more interested in movies and activities” and men are “more interested in coffee and foods”.) This is the more figurative approach to the advertisement. However the literal purpose of the ad is to advertise the Cairo Mall it is trying to show how they have a wide range of products that different types of people will want. It also tries o show us that by going to this mall we will be happy and enjoy our life there.

Everyone is being addressed in this advertisement. I would like to add however that there are 3 types of people that are being replied on which are stereotypical women men and kids which might lessen the market. I would also think that it replies heavily on the Cairo population as they are more likely to go to the mall. I also believe that the whole pin up feel is trying to give citizens the feeling that they are in the 50s meaning before the war and happy bright joyful. Giving them the idea that they can come to relax which is why this ad would do well as the audience is anyone trying to enjoy/relax more. It is assumed that if the reader is a child they will like movies and toys it is assumes if you are a women you will want a purse and if you are a man you will want food. It has a stereotypical approach to their audiences which is why it assumes that person a will want object a it is just very predictable.

It shows the reader that there will always be products made for them and things they will enjoy. It pursues people to come to the mall because it shows the “dreamy” side of it. The reader, by looking at the image will look at the person that is most similar to them, then they would look at what the sketch is interested in, which would have a high chance of being something they also enjoy, and become persuaded to go. The oppositional reading of this ad would be a criticism to the mall actually. Without context this image looks like a statement of how we have become relying on materialism rather than one another. This might change the readers mind about going to the mall.

However the ideology that might go against this advertisement might be feminism. Since feminism is an ideology about being equal and getting rid of stereotypes they might not appreciate this ad that has such a strong stereotypical view attached to it.

The text is trying to convince us to buy their products, in this case GAP children’s clothing. The advertisement tries to add a personal touch to their ad as they want to break people up into smaller groups to further sell their products. This ad also shows us the writers intent through this division as by separating the products by genders they market towards each gender through their stereotype. They did this by implying that boys make like darker colors and colors that are more blue and green and then they also assume that girls will like lighter colors and colors very similar to pinks and yellows. This shows us the gender stereotype of how pinks are for girls and blues are for boys. It also uses language to show their intent through the advertisement as the boy is shown to be smart and a “scholar” and the girl is shown to be more popular and “a social butterfly”. This is playing with more dangerous controversy as it is somewhat implying that boys are smart and girls are more focused on their social life which is not only stereotypical but also highly sexist which in the end is even worse as this is an advertisement meant for children clothing. Their intentions are made as obvious as it can be it is an advertisement for clothes and because its for kids they tried to make it simpler by using stereotypes however they forgot that those stereotypes may have some underlying sexist remarks. However I believe that there are also some more subtle intentions or messages in the text such as the cat ears the girl is wearing, even though it can simply be cat ears I still believe it has a stereotypical value to it as it might be inching to the fact that girls may be more appreciative towards animals. Or the way that Einstein is spelt on the boys shirt may be ironic as he is portrayed as the “scholar”.

The people that are being addressed in this ad are children obviously, however the actual reach of the advertisement is toward the parents as the parents are the people with the credit cards and money and they are the people that will be buying these clothes for their children. It is also heavily relying on children with a very simple view of clothing or more parents with a very simple view as it includes very strong stereotypes therefore the people buying these clothes might be more traditional. In terms of demographics this ad probably refers to girls and boys that have a medium to high class as the clothes are semi fancy therefore there is an implication that they will b wearing fancy clothing even at that young of an age. It is assumed that the reader of the text may only fit into 2 categories being girly and liking pink and being social, or being smart a boyish highly masculine boy that likes blues and greens. The reader is also positioned to be more traditional and to stick with these stereotypes when buying clothes for their children. As in there are almost told to look at specific items for the gender of their child.

There isn’t really a person that speaks in the text but more of a message. I believe that the message that is portrayed however was a mistake and isn’t really what the company was going for. I think they were trying to create an ad that could help them sell their products better and they tried to give off a cute image of a girl being this social butter fly and this boy being a scholar however I think that the way the ad ended up being portrayed might have made it quite sexist and created this message of how we need to loos stereotypes. I believe this because it kind of gives us the scare that this ad was for children clothes and we let sexism get to our children and I fell as if it is kind of a scary unintentional message. I believe that the writer addresses us on directly however not really accurately as it is somewhat incorrect and doesn’t really relate to everyone. I think that the narration is very stable and is constant as it is very stereotypical with all aspects of this ad.

This is a type of marketing that splits two groups up to further increase their sales. The main form and structure of this ad is a split screen of blue and pink products to differentiate the different genders. It reminds me of old advertisements as it uses a lot of stereotyping which used to be used more often in prior decades. I believe that this ad it more traditional as it is made with a more traditional belief in the genders being used.

I like how you explore the organization of the image. I wonder if something could be said about the different body language of both the boy and the girl. For instance, how about the more active versus more passive body language. Could tis contribute to social scripts?

Very thorough reading of the text, overall! You are very good at approaching texts.
I like how you acknowledge different audiences that the ad addresses.
I wonder: Could the strong and soft colours and/or patterns of each product lines inform the way gender marketing seems to work? Could it influence the narrative of how boys and girls should choose to express themselves?
