This artifact is a newsletter/poster that was published during the outbreak of World War 1. Uncle Sam is giving out the message for citizens to serve the country in war. To me, community service learning is performing a good deed for a good cause. We engage in community service learning to give back to the community to the best of our ability. While engaging in community service, we learn about different backgrounds and perspectives. This artifact represents the Community Service Learning pillar in CIVICUS because Uncle Sam is asking for all citizens to step up and give back to the country by serving in war. The United States was in a dilemma since they were running short of troops. So, Uncle Sam was used as a way to get citizens to serve the country when the army needed it most.

This artifact is the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. This medal was awarded to Dr. Sally K Ride due to her outstanding leadership and influential role model status. Dr. Sally K Ride was the first American woman to go to space. To me, the leadership symbolizes strength and determination. To be a leader, one must be determined to achieve the end result, regardless of the situation. Being a leader deems immense responsibility and courage. This artifact relates to the Leadership pillar in CIVICUS because Dr. Sally K Ride was the first American woman to have the courage to fly to space. She also led many task forces and led many organizations which proved that she deserved the NASA Outstanding Leadership medal.

Community Building in a Diverse Society

This artifact is the ecumenical symbol located in a Hindu temple in New York. This symbol represents five major religions: Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism. Although this artifact is to be found in the Hindu Temple Society of North America, it includes symbols of four other religions. To me, Community Building in a Diverse Society is accepting other people's beliefs and ideologies. In order to be a diverse community, everyone must be inclusive towards each other. When you build a community in a diverse society, you are accepting other people's opinions, ideologies, and beliefs. This artifact relates to the Community Building in a Diverse Society pillar of CIVICUS because the Hindu temple is implementing Universalism by adding four other major religions in their temple. They are showing acceptance towards these other religions, and they are building a community based on religious diversity.

This artifact is called the Edison Lamp. This artifact was created by Thomas Edison, the first person to create a light bulb. Scholarship means to achieve a high level of excellence. It also means excelling academically. This artifact relates to the Scholarship pillar of CIVICUS because Thomas Edison worked on this artifact for years and figured out a way to produce electricity. He went above and beyond and created a way to generate light, which is very, very much used in our society today. Thomas Edison classifies as a scholar because he achieves something that no one else did.

This artifact is a poster for voting. These posters symbolized that someone had done their part as a citizen and voted. To me, Citizenship is the quality of a person's response to membership in a community. Being a citizen of a country, for example, deems the responsibility of voting. This artifact relates to the Citizenship pillar for CIVICUS because this flyer/poster showed that someone did their part as being a citizen of a community. Being a part of the CIVICUS community, one can obtain the citizenship quality by doing their part as a citizen. For example, I can engage in discussions and be inclusive of my peers to gain the quality of citizenship because I am responding to my membership as a CIVICUS student.
