It was one year after the September 11 attacks and I was visiting my best friend in the United States of America. The trip there was uneventful but clearing security was a nightmare. I recall being made to open all my luggage so that they could check my belongings. They even dusted my laptop to ensure there was no explosives. Flying to USA that year is memorable because that was the first time I took a plane and I did it alone. Before the pandemic when we could all travel freely (oh, those good ol' times), I went to Fukuoka, Japan. The twist is - I went alone at the age of 12.

Yes, you've read that right, I went there without family. My parents wanted me to understand a different culture and lead a different lifestyle. They sent me off to a friend's house for a week. 

The plane ride there was, dare I say, phenomenal. As I took our very own Singapore Airlines, they provided free escort service for minors. As I bid my farewells, thrilled yet nervous, my escort told me I had to leave for the plane. After checking in and boarding the plane at 11 p.m., I departed from Singapore. 

Personally, I prefer a window seat, as it would then dawn on me that I am in the sky, and not the solid earth we live in. I would get to see the soft clouds and azure sky. Unfortunately, I did not get assigned a window seat. Leaning back on the seat and legs on the footrest, I slept for most of the journey before I woke up at 6 in the morning. Like any other Singaporean who would like to make full use of the plane ticket, I binged "Men In Black" while eating breakfast. Halfway through the flight, a flight attendant told me I could upgrade to Business Class as they had an extra seat! 

I was shocked. The flight attendant helped me with my luggage to transit into the wide and spacious Business Class seat. And of course, I continued my movie.

As I got onto the plane, I shambled in the narrow corridor until I found my seats. It was so exciting to be on a plane. Many people were trying to shove their belongings in the overhead space. I looked outside the window and saw other planes there, towering over all the workers. As the plane flew off, I felt weird feeling in my ears and I felt scared. As a result I sobbed quietly in a corner. 

I tried a couple drinks and food. To my surprise, it was actually decent enough for my tastebuds. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh waaaaaaaaaaaahhhh- I screeched, at the top of my lungs. Although only 60 centimeters long, the sound produced was ear-piercing. I guess empty vessels do make the loudest noise! My mother could not sit still as she had to walk back and forth along the plane throughout the whole journey, except for take-off and landing. She must be awarded an OSCAR for her incredible tolerance. It was too cold in the plane that my ears shut down. I did not know how to express myself in a language and hence I cursed the plane a gazillion times in my screech. It was by far the longest ride I had on a plane. The flight was 11 hours long, and I spent most of my time browsing through the games and movies shown on the little display. On the plane, i kept switching seats with my family members. be it the window seat with a marvelous view, or the squeezy and uncomfortable middle seat where people on your sides fall asleep on you, or even the outer most seat where the stewardess will notice you and offer free complimentary items, i wanted to experience it all. I also ate many good food, and the food serve were not local food, so it was fun trying new foods from a different culture. As I sat by the window, I fidgeted with the seat belts, constantly checking if it was secured. Many travellers streamed in, all rushing to find their row and put their baggage in the overhead compartment. My family and I were already seated at our row thanks to the priority boarding for families with young children. Five year old me looked out of the window, gazing at all the people on the runway leading the planes, and our beloved luggage getting loaded up with dozens of other luggage.  
Soon, the plane was about to take off, "All cabin crew, please get ready for take off" the pilot's voice echoed as the plane moves along the runway. The speed increased, the vibrations that could be felt increased and the loud sound of the engine scared me. I held on to my mothers' hand tightly as i closed my eyes and prayed that everything will go smoothly. With a blink of an eye, the plane was already in the sky. I was amazed at how beautiful the sky was and how small the land looked from up above the sky. As I sat and explored the surrounding, I found the safety manual and took it to read. As fascinating as it was, it was also terrifying as it showed me the dangers that can happen if something goes wrong. After an hour, the plane started jerking and I thought the plane was going to fall like what the safety manual said! As I held my mother's hand and my bunny, I closed my eyes and hoped for the best. My family not only laughed at how dramatic i was, they even snapped a picture and till now, laugh at how i reacted. Soon i fell asleep with the comfortable blanket and pillows provided. When I woke up, the plane had already landed and it was time to alight. It was indeed a scary but fun experience.

I was nervous since i had heard tales from my brother of how my ears would pop once we were in the air and that my ears would start ringing and hurting. My parents had to comfort me by reassuring me that my brother was lying and that my ears would be fine on the flight.

On the plane, I struggled with the seat belt and argued with my brother over the window seat. I had wanted to see the ground from up high. And when the plane took off, I watched as the ground below became smaller and smaller, until Singapore looked like a small spot in the blue sea. I was fascinated by the sea of clouds that were outside the window, that looked like cotten candy. The food on the airplane tasted horrible to me. Maybe it was due my taste buds being affected by the altitude but, I could only finish half my meal before giving up. Son after, i fell asleep in my seat.

When I woke up, I found that my mother was shaking me as we were going to descend soon. I was terrified as I felt like my ears were popping and they hurt really badly. My mother gave me chocolate to chew on to try to soothe the ache in my ear.

Overall, after the trip, I felt that the plane was not one of my favourite modes of transport. The pain in my ears was terrible, and the view of the clouds got boring after half an hour. My parents, two sisters and I were on a six-hour plane ride to Japan, Tokyo. My father sat with my younger sister while I sat with my mum and youngest sister. I vividly remember dreading the plane ride as it meant that my younger sister would be talking to either herself or every stranger she could find on the plane or she would be complaining and singing which would usually be accompanied with my one-year old sister crying non-stop. As the plane took off, I stared eagerly out of the window as I sucked my sweet as hard as I could. As soon as the great view of Singapore disappeared which was replaced with clouds, I immediately went to start binge-watching on Netflix. Trying to appreciate the quietness as it last, my sisters ahem started crying and complaining. It was one of the worst six hours of my life.

It was my first time going overseas besides going on annual road trips to Malaysia. Quite scared for the take off, I gripped onto my mother firmly. The whole time my heart was beating quickly because I was afraid of potentially dropping into the sea underneath and dying. To distract myself, I watched iPad movies with my sister, slept and ate the airplane food (bread and butter) which was surprisingly to my liking. I even got to experience the unusual blockage of my ears in which I had to keep swallowing my saliva to clear. At the least that is what my mother told me to do. She was very excited to see her children being on board on a plane for their first experience so she kept her fingers snapping away while I posed animatedly for her. Overall, I mostly ate like a pig. Whatever my mom ordered I ate. As I sat down, the first thing I got reminded of is a movie theatre. They provided blankets, magazines, headphone and even a small screen in front of you. I was amazed by the things provided in such a small space. As I looked to my side, the view from the plane window is something one could never imagine. White fluffy clouds that look so soft and I really wanted to touch it. Another thing that amused me is the safety card given in the pockets of all seats. It had cartoon on it and I found it interesting to read. My 3 year-old, tired and groggy self took a shower and changed into the clothes my mother prepared beforehand for me. the journey to the airport was fast as there were barely any cars on the road. My father hauled the sleeping bodies of my brother and i out of the cab upon reaching the airport and swiftly checked our family in. 

On the plane, my brother and i drew drawings, played video games and of all, received many free snacks! However, the highlight of the plane ride was when my brother and i managed to see the inside of the cockpit! The pilots were very friendly and old. I was travelling via Tiger Airways to India, to see my old grandparents. My mother bought us tickets for the trip and we went through all the immigration processes and finally reached the lounge. 

‘All passengers, please board your plane to India now. Thank you!’

Said the automated female voice. I heaved my heavy bag and trudged after my mother to the plane.

‘Wow!’

My eyes lit up in excitement as I looked up at the humungous plane that towered above like a HDB building. 

Once everyone fastened their seat belt, the plane took of with a swish! As we gained altitude, I looked down at the beautiful scenery through the window. I wistfully waved at the people below. Goodbye, Malaysia!

Though, i do remember how i felt when the plane was taking off.  I was engulf in my jacket, holding onto my pillow in one hand and my mum's hand in another. I had to tilt my head all the way back till my neck hurt just to look for the seat number. Back then, i really thought i was a big help. Walking down the aisle of seats, a person complimented on my pillow. My pillow was part doll of an elephant and was the most comfortable thing i had to bring onto the plane ride with me. I smile cheekily up at the stranger and hugged my pillow tighter before continuing my way to find our seats. After all the fuss of finding the seats and making ourselves comfortable and buckled in our seats, the pilot continued to make announcement. I looked around and saw a lot of the adults around me. They wore a bored faces and some looked ready to sleep. I was actually scared. This was my first time airborne and from the stories my mum told me in her years working in the airport, the plane toilet was a scary place and the plane taking off or landing was a scary time. I believed in my mum but i also wanted to look cool. I put on a fake brave bored face. How could a plane ride be that scary? The plane took off and my ears were in pain.
 "swallow your saliva" my mum would advise and i would do just that. I was sitting near the window next to me was my friend. There were many passengers. That's when the pilot announced that the plane was about to take off. After a while it finally took off and I was staring at the amazing view from the plane (it's just clouds). Even though the plane ride was short, I saw some movies and listened to songs.
