A collection of evidence from various sources that answers the question: Why do ethnic minority and low-income populations suffer from statistically higher rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other diet-related conditions than the general population?

One major reason for why ethnic minority and low-income population having higher rates of obesity is the idea of "Food Desserts" which is basically the idea that certain areas have very limited access to grocery stores. "Low-income census tracts have half as many supermarkets as wealthy tracts."
Another reason is that convenience stores tend to have greater prices than in supermarkets. Some people only have access to convenience stores so they are forced to pay the higher prices.
Lastly, supermarket prices are usually cheaper and are more accessible to the wealthy. For example, the price of apples in a small store is $1.94 whereas the price at a supermarket is only $1.76.

OK

One of the reasons that minority and low-income populations suffer from statistically higher rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are because the prices of foods at smaller convienience stares are much higher than at supermarkets. For example, the price of a gallon of whole milk at a small food store is $4.28 while the price for the same milk at the nearest supermarket is $3.86. This difference in prices leads to higher rates of these diet-related conditions in minorities because they have less access to supermarkets due to thier living situations. Another piece of evidence that shows these "food deserts" have a huge impact on minorities is stated in the Teaching Tolerance article. The article states that, "Of all U.S. households, 2.3 million (2.2 percent) live more than a mile from a supermarket and do not have access to a vehicle. An additional 3.2 percent live between a half-mile to a mile from a supermarket with no vehicle access." This proves how minorities tend to live farther from grocery stores and have even less access to those stores when they don't own a vehicle. This leads to them investing in cheaper food options which are usually less healthier than the more expensive options leading to diet-related conditions.

JH

People that live in rural places and are low-income tend to have higher obesity and diabetes rates. They would have to settle for cheaper, and unhealthy food. Grocery stores are far away and public transportation isn't common. Since Grocery stores aren't an option, they settle for convenience stores where the amount of junk food is high and healthy food- low.

In the city, buildings like grocery stores are everywhere, maybe a walking or a casual and short bus ride of a distance. They don't have to struggle as much as the people in rural areas. This whole obesity situation isn't based on race at all. It's based on location and poverty along with other smaller factors.

DP

The first reason why ethnic minority and low-income populations suffer from diet-related conditions than the general population is because Black and Hispanic neighborhoods have fewer large supermarkets and more small grocery stores. The smaller grocery stores are filled with junk food and don't offer fresh food. Also, in suburban and rural areas where there are food deserts, it's harder to get to grocery stores, meaning that there's less food in the house. Lastly, for low-income people, supermarkets have food that is a lot more expensive than smaller convenient stores. This means that people are obviously going to go to the cheaper stores, but they have unhealthy food.
GA

Minority populations and low-income areas suffer from higher obesity rates than other races or in higher income areas. There are a number of reasons for this, like how many low-income areas lack grocery stores, how low-income areas have more convenience stores than others, and the availability of foods in different stores. A statistic in 2009 showed that over 23 million people from low-income areas lived a mile or further away from the grocery store, this keeps them from buying good food and having a healthy diet. Convenience stores cause another problem because they are more prominent in low-income areas and sell very unhealthy and not very nutritional foods. The availability of foods in different stores also affects this because in grocery stores healthy fruits and vegetables are available, but in convenience stores there are lots of unhealthy food/junk foods.

One reason that ethnic minorities and low income population have higher obesity rates is because food deserts, areas without good access to grocery stores and healthier food, are generally found in Black and low income communities according to the Food Empowerment Project. The small stores that are in food deserts have a smaller selection of food, which is generally less nutritious and higher in fats and sugars. These items also cost more in smaller stores because these smaller stores buy the products wholesale for more than bigger chains would.

One reason why minorities report higher rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, etc. is because of the location they live. Some neighborhoods do not have access to grocery stores and can only go to convenient stores. This can greatly impact what a person buys because convenient stores tend to sell more junk food than healthy food. Another reason is culture. Different cultures eat different foods, some foods being healthier than others. Lastly, healthy food is more expensive than unhealthy food. If people cannot afford the healthy food, the food they buy is more likely to cause health issues.
