After looking at Socrative, I think that it would be an excellent tool to use as assessment for learning. As a sixth class teacher, topics in all subjects can be long and complicated so Socrartive could be used in the middle of a topic to check the children's learning and to make adjustments to my teaching to ensure the learning of all the children eg teaching fractions and percentages in maths, to make sure that each child has grasped the initial concept before moving on to the next one, if they were working in teams, they could also help each other with their learning.

I too find that PowerPoint is a very useful tool for assessment, particularly in senior classes. Children get very involved with the subject matter when they know that they will be making a presentation to the class and it is a very easy way of assessing the children's learning at the end of a topic. I found that this module was very helpful for working more in the area of assessment for learning and I will be trying to incorporate Socrative and Kahoot in my classroom so that I can adjust my teaching methodolgiEs as I progress through the topic so I can achieve the most success with the most students. Like you, I was also very impressed with the recorded feedback from the teacher to to the student as in most busy classrooms, it is extremely difficult to have this one-to-one feedback everyday with every student.

Module One - Discussion Forum.Ireally like the idea of using Padlet for formative assessment, as a Sixth class teacher, I love the idea of the children being able to post their ideas on a noticeboard on a topic that they are just beginning, as it would really give the teacher a great advantage when planning their approach to the new topic. For example if I was studying a new continent like Africa, the children would have a chance to show what they already know about the continent and this would really inform the teacher's approach to the topic. I love the idea of Padlet being like an informal notice board as it does not put the children under pressure. I am also very impressed with the concept of returning to Padlet throughout the topic so that the children so can add to what they have learned and this is a means of self assessment for them.

However, I was really impressed with the idea of a maths dictionary. As a sixth class teacher, the idea that children could access a maths dictionary on Google docs is really good. I find that I teach a strand but when you go back to it later in the year, the children have forgotten the basic steps so it would be extremely usefup for the children to be able to access maths questions and step by step by step procedures in how to tackle these problem. This really would be excellent collaboratio. They could access this dictionary anywhere and this would help now and also in the future as you suggeste.

Patricia

I believe that after looking at this module that I would be very interested in using Google docs as an online collaboration tool to aid in literacy. As a sixth class teacher, I use First Steps as a tool to writing and I think that Google docs could be used in all genres of writing. Personally I think that narrative is one of the most difficult genres for children to grasp so I particularly love the idea of using Google docs for this genre. I love the idea of having a few questions to stimulate the children in the writing of the topicwhich they would all complete in school. Each child would write the short piece of narrative themselves, either in school or at home as Google docs is accessible everywhere, but they would have access to all the answers of the class from earlier, so this would help the child who was finding the topic challenging as they could use their own ideas or the ideas of other students. Also I really like idea of the child working collaboratively with a partner so that they could send their writing via Google docs to a partner who would make comments about the story content or punctuation or spelling, this would enable the child to self edit before sending it to a teacher. In this way the child is becoming more involved in his/her learning path, understanding what they know and what they still need to know. Also Google docs in this writing genre would allow the teacher to give instant feedback to the child to improve and develop their literacy.

EPortfolios as storage, children can store files, edit documents and presentations, they can also work collaboratively with their peers to work on a piece of work or presentations. In this way the child can become more actively involved in their own learning and their assessment, the child can look back on their work for the year and understand the progress they have made. This means that the child can have free and easy access to all their work throughout the year, it can be accessed anywhere, at home or school on any type of device, laptop, tablet or mobile phone, meaning the child can edit their EPortfolios anywhere. Also EPortfolios promotes collaboration among teachers as they can share work and develop ideas together. finally, EPortfolios means that there is no longer need for USB keys or other portable storage devices which can be easily damaged.

Module Three - Benefits to the teacher of assessment tools such as Edmodo.

Edmodo allows the teacher to be involved in formative assessment, so in reality this assessment is helping the child's learning, so the teacher can help as you go along. It is instantaneous assessment so this can have a direct impact on the child's learning and this can have an impact on their learning path immediately.
Also this type of assessment has made life easier for the teacher because you can help the child in the middle of the work process rather than just at the end , so in this way you are ensuring that the child's learning can be improved and developed instantaneously. Also Edmodo means that the teacher will not have to bring home lots of copies to correct and the work and the assessment can be done on the same day. Also Edmodo means that the teacher will have the time to give one to one feedback to every child and as all teachers knows , this is nearly virtually impossible in a full classroom. Finally it gives the teacher time to hear from every child, as we all know in a classroom situation, there are some children who are quiet and shy and so this gives the teacher the insight into every pupil and the ability to assess them irrespective of their personality on a daily basis.

I like the idea of using Edmodo in the classroom as a planning tool for these assignments and this then can help in scaffolding thieir writing later. I also like the idea of children using Edmodo, so that they can write a paragraph or two of their topic and I would have immediate access to this so I could give them formative assessment and this would have an impact on the rest of the topic and it would encourage children to draft, edit and finally be happy with their finished work. In this way the children would be leaning as they work on the topic rather than just assessing them at the end when they have lost interest and moved on to the next topic.

As a sixth class teacher, I think that this would be very effective, the childden would really enjoy collecting all the material from their time in primary school, they would also be very engaged in the task of picking and choosing which memories to use and the teacher and peers would be able to give formative assessment to enhance and improve it. Also the children would be encouraged to work collaboratively, finally the children's work from their time in primary school would be showcased. It's a great idea.

First Post
I would use EPortfolios as a part of a science and history project based on the history of flight and the science behind aeroplane wings. Firstly, I would use Padlet to allow children to post on this topic so that I would know where each child is at in this topic. I would then use Edmodo to divide the children into groups, some working on the various people involved in the history of flight and others working on a variety of basic experiments leading to an experiment based on the design of an aeroplane wing. Children would be able to access appropriate websites to their topic, which I would have organised for them on Edmodo, in this way the children would would be using Edmodo for both storage and as a workspace as the children would be storing their work in Edmodo and they would also be working collaboratively on their assigned task, some working on a presentation, others completing videos of their experiments and uploading them, thereby using a variety of media. I, as the teacher woul also be able to be engaged in formative assessment and therefore be able to give children the one to one feedback that they need, to continue improving their learning. Finally, I would get each group to design the best paper aeroplane based on what they would have learned from all groups as they would have access to the material on Edmodo. The class would come together and test their aeroplanes, this would be recorded and uploaded to Edmodo so their parents could access it( subject to the Schools's Acceptable Use Policy) and this would be therefore be the showcase of their work.

I really love the Brittanica website and the children will really enjoy it, as you say, there are so many types of multimedia which would suit every child. I have never used the Brύ na Boinne interactive site, this is excellent and the children would learn a lot from the site, including the mapping skills which would integrate with their geography. The You tube video on the summer solstice was excellent and once again very valuable to the children, to show the significance of Newgrange in the modern world. the children would love the idea of entering a draw to being in Newgrange for the winter solstice. Finally, I like the idea of wrapping up the topic by the use of resources for report writing. Really interesting learning path.

First Post
https://www.scoilnet.ie/learning-path/ref/2423/
https://www.scoilnet.ie/learning-path/ref/2423/

Hi. I set up a learning path for children in sixth class based on the civil rights movement in America. I focused particularly on two major figures, Rossa Parks as the catalyst for this movement and then I will encourage the children to take a more in depth look at the life of Martin Luther King and his vital role in the civil rights movement. I really love the idea of a learning path as it would really engage the children. In my learning path the children would be exposed to a variety of media, text, on the lives of Rossa parks and Martin Luther King, audio, the children will get a chance on one of the links to hear an interview with Rossa Parks and video, the children will get to look at footage of Martin's 'I Have a Dream ' speech. Finally the children will get to engage in a fun activity bringing all of their learning together in a wordsearch.

* This course has made me as the teacher look more closely at the importance of focusing on learning outcomes, not just at the beginning of starting EPortfolios but also looking at them throughout the process so we begin to put more emphasis on formative assessment, so that we can help the children to improve throughout the progress rather than summative assessment. Also I think that it is important as the teacher to ensure that the children themselves are engaged in formative assessment, that they begin to understand what outcomes are expected for them and why these outcomes are being assessed and most importantly, that they evaluate the process of learning and reflect on this progress themselves rather than always waiting for outside assessment, therefore they will begin to take a much more active role in their learning rather than being passive learners. All of this would need to be incorporated into a school self evaluation process.

ITo be honest, when I started this course, I knew very little about the use of ICT for assessment so I have found much of the information on this course invaluable. Some of the key features which I found excellent were

Introduction to the concept of ePortfolios- I learned a lot about the variety of tools that are available to use for EPortfolios such as Google docs, Padlet, Googledrive, Edmodo etc.
I learned much more about the importance of formative asseessment, as a teacher, I would usually put my focus on summative assessment and this course has highlighted this for me.
I also learned about the role of effective feedback and how this can have a much bigger impact on student's future progress, I was inntroduced to different ways that I could give this feedback, written, aural and video, thereby catering for all the different types of learners in my classroom.
I also learned more about the value of self and peer assessment, so that children become more actively involved in their own learning and they begin to see learning as more about the process rather than always about the end product.
I was very interested to learn about using ePortfolios in three ways, for storage, as a workspace and as a showcase.
I also thought that the importance of copyright was dealt with excellently in this course and I learned a lot from the website Creativecommons.org.
The module on Internet safety was also very informative as it highlighted the importance of the children being aware of what to do if they come across inappropriate content.
I think that I will begin applying the knowledge from this course in my classroom by beginning in a small scale with the introduction of ePortfolios in my classroom. I think that I would like to use Google Drive, I would initially begin with setting up a class folder, then giving each child an individual folder for their ePortfolio. I think that I would begin with one or two subjects so that I could introduce the class to it on a small scale, maybe focus on SESE and art so that I would ensuring that the children are understanding the process. I think that it would be very important to properly teach the children how to use their ePortfolio, to engage in self and peer assessment and I think that the children would need to be specifically taught how to engage in reflection on their own learning process as this would be all new to them. I also think that I would have to make sure that the feedback that I am giving them would be effective and encourage the children to become more active learners in their learning experience. I like the idea of using the learning paths in Soilnet to engage the children in specific learning topics and I would like to be able to incorporate some of the work from this into their ePortfolios.

In relation to the next step to the use of ICT for assessment, I think that the first thing that I will have to do in September is look again at the Acceptable Use Policy for my school and become familiar with it. T.hen I will at the beginning of the school year, go through this policy with my class so that we all understand it before we begin our EPortfolios, especially focused on the area of what children should do if they fiind inappropriate material. I would also intrduce them to some child friendly websites, particularly www.instagrok.com, as I really like the format of mind mapping which it uses and I think that the children would find this invaluable. I would also like to talk about copyright with them and introduce them to Creativecommons.org. as a starting point for this.

Second Post -Reply
Hi Ciara,

I am really impressed with the idea of a list of child friendly websites that the children can access, as a sixth class teacher, I find that on a regular basis, I ask children to go home and research topics. If I knew that the children were only using certain child friendly websites, this would make this activity safer for the children. If the parents also had access to this list, then they would know where to go on the Internet and this would make the whole process easier for all involved. I also like the idea of using better practice as the teacher citing the sources from we got our material, so that children will begin to put more value on the idea of copyright.

First Post.
Having completed Module five, I think that Internet safety and copyright should have a big impact on my classroom. I think that if I am going to try and use EPortfolios in my classroom that I will once again have to make the children aware of the safe use of the Internet in the classroom. Firstly, I would go through the Acceptable Use Policy with the class at the beginning of the year to recap on the main points and to make sure that each child is aware what to do if they happen to access inappropriate material, if I had a child or children with SEN, I would take some one to one time to go through this area in particular with them. I really like the idea from the video of displaying some of the key points from the policy on the wall in a favourable way. In this way the children would always have reminders about how they are supposed to behave when using the Internet, in a positive way rather than a negative way. As a sixth class teacher, I feel that I would have to give the children a certain level of trust while also closely supervising their time on the Internet. It would also be made clear to the children that when using tablets that I, as the teacher would have the right to observe what apps are being installed and being used. I also think that it is very wise to keep a record of who is using what machine or device, and to let a child a child or group of children have access to the same machine or device for a prolonged period, so that if an incidence did occur, it would be easy to monitor and handle. Regarding copyright, I also think that it would be important at the beginnning of the year, to discuss the concept of copyright with the children and to make them familiar with it. I think that Creative Commons.org would be an excellent website to introduce to the class and I would encourage the children to use this when working on their ePortfolios.
