Mrs. Smiths House

Laird Welch

pages-34/35

"The house looked asleep. It sat at the very end of a quiet first lane, and their tops met over it so that the lane was shadowed in green. The house sat pushed back from the trees, in a small pool of sunlight, but vines snaked up the red brick chimney and bushes ran rampant around the windows. A small roof sheltered a door painted red, like the chimney. But the house was flat gray, dull behind the bushes. Curtains were drawing over the windows and the door "

The quote is significant because it shows the reader how Mrs. Smith had been living before the children came to her. It showed that she was living alone and was quite sad and droopy. It impacts the characters in that it makes Ada realize later on that Mrs. Smith has been quite lonely after Becky died.

Image credit-https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F522769469215971748%2F&psig=AOvVaw0szuMspcRgDIZrrvLzjqvK&ust=1621100127399000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=2ahUKEwism5fb2snwAhXPJjQIHT8aCesQr4kDegQIARBO

It was Ada’s first time at Maggie’s house and she had never seen one as big as her’s. This is also when she met Mr. Grimes for the first time. “The trees opened up and in front of us was a huge stone building, big like I imagined the dock warehouses must be. Big like the London train station. It couldn’t be right. Whatever place it was, it wasn’t a house.” Page 102 https://www.houstoniamag.com/home-and-real-estate/dream-homes-top-neighborhoods-2019

The bottom half of it was buried in the ground, and you had to go down three steps to open the little door. Inside, there was just room for two long benches, facing each other."
The shelter reminded Ada of the old cabinet mam would put her in. The shelter smelt damp, just like the cabinet. The cabinet was a very traumatic place for Ada, and reminded her of the abuse her mother put her through. Ada has to go into the shelter against her will every time the bombing siren goes off to be safe from german bombs.
