An example of this thematic idea being present in the book is materialized in the character juxtaposition between Mildred and Clarisse: It was introduced in the early stages of the book that Clarisse opted to observe her surroundings and be perceptive of the people she interacts with, fueling the expression of her care-free and genuine joyous perspective on life. In contrast, Mildred was introduced in a bleak and depressing setting, later revealed to be deeply obsessed and consumed by the media of the novel's world through continuous setting imagery (parlour, seashells, etc.) that leads to a depthless character who is internally emotionally suffering.

Montag learns through the medics that reviving suicide attempts is a very common act. The commonality of suicide attempts and saves blurs the line between life and death in this futuristic society. Upon realizing this, Montag begins to wonder what life truly is and why it feels so empty and dead.

Fear is used by totalitarian governments to create a rigorous type of jurisdiction, and make the population aware that, if they do not obey, they will face fear into the eyes. In the novel this is adapted through the burning of books, this creates censorship to shape a non-revolting population since with the burning they fear getting their homes burnt down. Another reasonable example is the Mechanical Hound. When an individual commits to a crime, we normally think of escaping from the fact that you have done something illegal to avoid a sentence. Yet, the hound is used to make the population aware that there is no such thing as hope in order to escape, since it is “flawless” and never fails as the TV reporter explains.
