Ralph

He is the main protagonist of the novel and a natural leader, demonstrating this when he is first elected. He tries to keep everything as normal as possible. Ralph is also very civilized and logical.

Jack

He is the main antagonist. He is a power-seeking boy who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Unlike Ralph, when he creates his own group he reverts to savage-like leadership.

Simon

After their plane crashes on a deserted island, a group of British schoolboys find themselves with no adult supervision. Almost immediately, Ralph is elected leader because he held the conch that he blew that brought everyone together. To try and get off the island, he creates a signal fire at the top of the mountain. Jack craves Ralph's authority and decides to leave the beach for Castle Rock with many of the other boys. He creates a primal tribe and they murder Simon and Piggy. Jack's tribe then tries to kill Ralph by setting fire to the forest, but instead they attract a naval officer and the remaining boys get rescued.

The Conch

When you blow into the conch, it creates a loud, whale-like sound that calls all the boys down to meeting place. When the boys are discussing matters, the one who holds the conch has the attention of the people. It symbolizes civilization and order because it brings everyone together, as well as power for the one who has it.

The Signal Fire

At first, the fire is burned at the top of the mountain. However, when the boys divide between Jack and Ralph, it is moved to the beach. The flame represents hope for rescue because as long as it is burning there is a greater chance of being found.

Piggy's Specs

To create the signal fire, one must angle Piggy's specs correctly with the sun. Their capability to create the fire makes them very valuable. They embody the status of the group at different moments of time. The glasses foreshadow what is to come for the civilization.

The Lord of the Flies

The severed pig on a stick calls itself "the Lord of the Flies" as it fills Simon with negativity and evil thoughts. Simon is going insane, so all of the things the pig is saying is his own conscience. This novel is titled "Lord of the Flies" because it is a huge allegory for evil. Not just within ourselves, but within others like Jack. It shows how external and internal evils can cause us to behave in a savage-like way.

The Beast

The younger boys of the group claim that there is a beast within the forest, and the older boys believe them. There is no real, physical "beast", but there is the internal evil we all have within us. The dark negative side we all have. This gets brought out when the boys are filled with fear on the island.

My Opinions

I thought that this was a interesting and powerful novel. It gave me insight on how cruel humans can be, no matter what the age. It is filled with beautifully crafted yet horrifyingly detailed imagery of graphic scenes of killing. Nonetheless, it is a classic that everyone should read for its deep and thoughtful allegories of the human condition.
