"I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw

"I don't want to be
Anything other than what I've been trying to be lately
All I have to do is think of me
And I have peace of mind
I'm tired of looking 'round rooms
Wondering what I've got to do
Or who I'm supposed to be
I don't want to be anything other than me"

This chorus parallels the text from Emerson's essay because the artist understands that "a man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best" and that he must "absolve 'him' to "himself", and [he] shall have the suffrage of the world." He doesn't want to think about what everyone is pressuring him to be. He wants to be himself, and he understands that thinking about who he wants to be and paying no mind to the plethora of opinions from everyone else will bring him peace and happiness. He truly understands that "nothing can bring you peace but yourself."

"I'm surrounded by liars
Everywhere I turn
I'm surrounded by imposters
Everywhere I turn
I'm surrounded by identity crisis
Everywhere I turn"

This verse is parallel to the text from Emerson's essay because it seems that the artist has reached the time Emerson referred to in the beginning where "he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide." He notices that the people around him are acting in a way untrue to themselves and, as indicated by usage of the word "liars", frowns upon them.

This fictional character played by Laura Bailey, embodies self-reliance. She doesn't let anyone dull her shine or put a damper on her childish, cheerful personality. She follows her heart and puts her all into everything she does, whether it be trying out a new, ambitious and unconventional attack with her friend or planning a convention for her Patron, The Traveller. She knows that "a man is relieved and
gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise,
shall give him no peace."
