Be Opinionated First and foremost, be bold and strong. If you hate a character in a film describe in detail exactly why ("the acting was  too subtle they had no real identity") do not say "He was rubbish”. However if you enjoyed the beginning scene say so. Remember that you aren't writing your review to make friends; your mission is to fairly inform the public of your experiences, positive or negative.

Add Facts Most reviews mix facts with the basic opinions. Information could include the running time of a movie or the name of an author of a book. Without some facts  your review will be too short of substance and leave the reader without the opportunity to find out for themselves whether they agree with you.

Be Detailed If you don't like a novel, explain why. Don't just say, "This book was dull." Instead, describe what made boring. Was it too long? Was the writing unexciting? Was it hard to read? Was the plot confusing? You want your audience to understand why you had the reaction you did.

Add Some Humour Sometimes, you can spice up a review with a little humour. If something occurs to you  that is funny use it, but do not waste time trying to think up something amusing.

Develop a Rating System of Your Own One of the best parts of writing a review is giving a rating. Some people use stars, others use the "thumbs up/thumbs down" method. If you are able to, develop your own rating system. Be clever; most readers appreciate a little fun. For instance, if you're reviewing your local pet shop you could use bones or if you are reviewing a cricket match you could use cricket balls or bats.

Give Suggestions Finally, it's appropriate to make some suggestions. If you're reviewing the latest book by J. K. Rowling but were unmoved, you might want to suggest that readers go to their local library to borrow the book rather than buying it.

Finally In the end, your audience is looking for you to give them some direction, so don't hold back. Be fair, be honest, and you'll wind up with a great review!

A well-structured blog posting will catch the readers' attention, and make them want to read what you have to say. You can help do this if you follow these tips:

Put your name and date at the top of your blog on the left hand side

·        Give the blog posting a title that will catch the reader’s eye. This is the first thing they see and will help them decide if it is of interest to them.

·        Put the main point in the first paragraph. This is the first thing readers see and it will make them want to read on.

·        Put the details in the following paragraphs of your posting.

·        Finally, in the last part of the posting add the background information and your name if you wish to.

Writing style

·        Try to write in a friendly and informal style. Use first person ‘I’ and try to include reference to what you are writing about.

·         Think about your readers and what they can learn from your experience.

·        Try to describe rather than tell e.g. instead of saying you thought a book was great, try to explain why you enjoyed it and what you learned from it.

·        Try to question your reader and ask for their response to what you have written.

·        Always be polite, respectful of other cultures and opinions, and informative.

·        Remember lots of FEARRR rhetorical questions, facts repetition, rule of three etc

The key to presenting the perfect speech is preparation and practice. World leaders don't just stand up and make up a speech on the spot - they carefully prepare beforehand. They even employ people to write their speeches, although remember, this is not an option at school!

An effective speech needs to:

•       Use the English language skilfully - as you have time to prepare your speech in advance, you can show off your English language skills and vocabulary.

•       Be memorable - former prime minister Tony Blair was famous for making a speech that included the phrase "Education, education, education". This use of repetition made the speech memorable and helped his audience identify his key point.

•       Make people think - you may have heard of Martin Luther King who repeated the phrase "I have a dream" when he campaigned for equal rights for black Americans. This was a speech designed to inspire and connect with his audience.

A good speech might contain the following:

•       Rhetorical questions A question which does not       require an answer. This type of question is so obvious it does not need an answer and it can help to reinforce a point

•       Repetition Repetition of words creates emphasis. Eg: We must all try to write with purpose, write with feeling and write using techniques to persuade. Using the word ‘write’ 3 times gives it more emphasis

•       Rule of three The rule of three is a technique by which three related words or points are presented in quick succession for literary effect, e.g. friends, romans, countrymen.

•       Emotive language This is used to make us feel something. It could be: Pity, Sympathy “That poor boy” Anger or Hope.

•       Direct address This is writing that directly addresses the audience., either personally or as a member of a shared group. It involves words like, us, we, you, our.

•       Evidence (statistics, quotations, examples) 96% of people agree with us. Mr jones from the Labour Party stated “We can make this happen if we all rally together.”
