Despite his large political influence and commendable rapport with  the people, he decided to accept Islam in 611, risking his esteemed position. He was also one of the first Muslims in Muhammad SAW's following, even inviting his close friends and family to embrace Islam. This has resulted him in becoming one of the 10 Sahabah promised Paradise.   

He was also known as the Amin of the Ummah (Custodian of the Ummah) for his trustworthiness and reliable nature. Coupled with his kind and soft spoken nature, it made him an exceptional negotiator. This led to his appointment as Commander in Chief of the Muslim Army in 634. This raised many questions amongst the sahabah regarding his actions. Allah then sent down Ayah 22 of Surah Mujadila.

His involvement in the migration to Abysinnia was a trial of his wit and patience. In an attempt to win over the Christian King Negus of Abysinnia, he read Surah Maryam to appease the former. 

While not a brilliant tactician like Khalid ibn Walid RA, Abu Ubaidah RA as the Commander of the Rashidun Army, invaded and conquered As-Sham. In a visit by Umar RA, he inquired Abu Ubaidah RA, "O' Abu Ubaidah, you [could/should] have arranged some things of comfort for yourself at home." Replied Abu Ubaidah "O' Umar that's enough for me."
