Origin: My drawing looks somewhat like the old scientists scientists taught about at school (e.g. Newton). 

Conclusion: This image isn't really representative of modern scientists or scientific work. It is rather a stereotypical depiction like that of scientists of the past.

Description: The scientist I have drawn is my imagination of future primary students who I will teach science to. She is excited about what she knows and is eager to present her knowledge in a creative and engaging way through the diagrams behind her. She has a significant depth of knowledge about various areas in science and is excited to learn more. She is dressed in a typical lab coat with safety glasses and enclosed shoes. This outfit is essential because she is constantly conducting primary research.

Origin: I have completed the 'draw a scientist task' in another Early Childhood unit so I wanted to challenge conventional expectations by drawing a girl. However, she is still dressed as a typical scientist. My parents work in the areas of mathematics, science and engineering so I have an appreciation for science and its importance today, particularly in the classroom.

Conclusion: I think you are a scientist when you are thinking scientifically, engaging with the needs of the world around you and are curious about our complex world. My scientist drawing aims to convey this view.

 

Background: I am a 21-year-old male currently in his 4^th year of studying. I am studying a Bachelor of Arts with a Bachelor of Education (primary). I am also currently completing my final professional experience and I love sport. 

 

Description: My scientist has just done a cool experiment in front of his class, wearing smart-casual clothing holding a piece of scientific apparatus.

 

Origin: Whilst drawing this picture, I was mainly thinking about the teachers I had in high school for science. They were generally male and usually of older age, wearing smart casual clothing with some protective gear as they taught their lessons.

 

Conclusion: My drawing represents a typical scientist from my schooling days. However, I do understand that scientists are not always male, and the appearance of them can vary in multiple ways from hairstyles to scientific equipment. Additionally, scientists have differing responsibilities and curiosities within their profession.  

 

Background: I am a 22 year old female currently studying a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Primary). This is my fourth year of study and I am currently completing my final professional experience. 

 

Description: My scientist has just demonstrated an experiment in front of the class. The test tubes and beaker contain different chemicals which were used to demonstrate chemical reactions. The scientist is wearing protective glasses and a lab coat for safety. 

 

Origin: When drawing my scientist I thought back to my science lessons in high school. The teacher was generally male, wore protective clothing and demonstrated experiments in front of the class before we conducted experiments ourselves. 

 

Conclusion: My drawing represents a stereotypical high school science teacher from when I was in high school. However, scientists are not always male and do not always conduct experiments with chemicals as there are many other content strands in the science KLA. 

Background: I am a 18 year old female studying in my 1st year of a Bachelor of Arts with a Bachelor of Education (Primary). I love travelling and spending time with family and friends.

Description: My scientist is a female that is wearing a lab coat and safety goggles. I presented my scientist with whiteboard and a range of equipment that is used for experiments (e.g. the beaker that she is holding).

Origin: My drawing is inspired by my high school science teachers. All my science teachers were female and used a whiteboard write down key points and draw diagrams, which is show in my drawing.

Conclusion: My drawing depicts my initial ideas of what a scientist looks like and what they do in a lab. I also wanted to emphasise the fact that my view of a scientist is a female instead of the stereotypical male scientist, due to my high school experience.

Background: Female, 24, Bachelor of Education (Birth to 12 yrs). I love the emotional rewards of teaching. I like to baking and travelling. 

Description: My scientist been working on some new experiment and is taking note as he work. He is wearing safety glasses and big safety boots. 

Origin: My scientist was inspired by my experiences in science in high school in addition to showing what I think a stereotypical scientist look like. 

Conclusion: I am not the best drawer however hope my ideas are understandable. My goal is to be able to teach children how to engage with their world through scientific experiments, observation, communication and problem solving.

Description: When I think if scientists I think of me being back in the chemistry labs of high school and previous university commitments. We all had to wear lab coats and suitable eye protection. We had to memorise the valency of elements on the periodic table, and we had many experiments using variety of scientific apparatus. 

Origin: The origin of this drawing relates back to me and my experiences of science. I often enjoyed learning scientifically, discovering and experimenting with a variety of approaches. Therefore I drew the scientist with a smile, beside my favourite apparatus the bunson burner! 

Conclusion: My depiction of a scientist highlights my initial belief of what scientist do or look like. They are generally in a laboratory, performing experiments or trying to discover a cure for cancer. The apparatus used, such as beakers, test tubes and bunson burners are domain specific. 

Description: This is a non gender specific scientist who is wearing a lab coat and glasses. They are standing in a room with some equipment and posters on the wall that look science related. The scientist seems fairly happy with their work although they have a disproportionate leg to torso ratio.

 

Origin: This picture is the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about scientists. It has been influenced by the media and the representation of scientists in movies etc.  

Conclusion: My picture shows a common stereotype of what scientists looks like. Although I know this is a stereotype, I think growing up seeing this kind of image in the media and throughout my schooling, it has embedded this image in my head and is difficult to change.

Description: This is a male scientist working in his lab, he is wearing safety equipment. My scientist is 'crazy' and is making some sort of potion. However, after I drew him it seems he looks like he has lost control of an experiment.

 

Origin: This picture is the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about scientists. It reminds me of a stereotypical mad scientist. It also is what I think of how I looked when doing science in high school.

Conclusion: My picture shows a stereotypical depiction of science, the crazy or mad scientist approach. Although, I really enjoyed science in high school and acknowledge that this depiction is not accurate to a science lab or scientist.

 

Background: I am a 18 year old female student in my first year studying primary education. I love sport and my job working as a teacher’s aide with year 2 students. I was not interested in science in high school, but I am hoping to view this subject from a different perspective. 

 

Description: This is an image of my scientist. I have drawn my scientist in a lab as that is the science environment I am most familiar with. My scientist is a male and wearing a typical lab coat and enclosed shoes, holding a test tube. 

 

Origin: My drawing illustrates a scientist in a lab, who works in chemistry. My scientist is a great role model as he is wearing the correct attire to enter a lab. My scientist is surrounded my chemicals and equipment that will be used to conduct his experiments. 

 

Conclusion: I believe my drawing was based upon my experience of science in High school, where we would go in the lab and conduct experiments. My drawing consists of scientific equipment I am aware of. My scientist is stereotypical by the way he is dressed and by the objects he is surrounded by.
