The first crisis represented in Willy’s life was when he was feeling hesitant about his affair with the Woman, but she tells him, “You didn’t make me Willy. I picked you” (38). Willy had been traveling for years on the road all alone and has felt isolated from his family, even though he is the sole provider and maintains financial stability for the Loman’s. Willy has felt consistently like he will never amount to a higher success and he never feels like he is good enough for anyone. The Woman’s seduction and persuasion puts Willy in a state of grandeur because he actually feels wanted, but it also makes him realize he does not have the same adoration with his family members. This is hazardous to Willy’s well-being because his epiphany of striving for more will make him feel as though he will do whatever it takes to maintain a better idea of himself, even if it could put him in harm’s way.

The first song to accommodate Willy’s affair with the Woman and his crisis of self worth is “Swim” by Jack’s Mannequin. The song introduces the idea that a person should do whatever it takes to stay afloat. Many times life will try to knock you down and make you feel small, but you have to keep pushing forward no matter what gets left behind in the process. An important lyric to listen for is, “You’ve gotta swim, swim for your life… The currents will pull you away from your love” (Jack’s Mannequin). This lyric epitomizes the reality that one must keep moving ahead and that at times people can be pushed away from the ones who matter most even though one is just trying to live for themselves.

The second crisis in Willy's life is when he is fired from his lifelong salesman job and is horrified by the fact that his company can just throw him away after all he has done for them. Willy exclaims, "I put thirty-four years into the firm Howard... You can't eat the orange and throw the peel away-a man is not a piece of fruit!" (82). Willy is baffled by the fact that he was just a useless pawn in his life work, and everything he has worked for will lead to nothing. He also lives in agony now that no one is providing for the family and they will struggle even more than they ever have. This will put Willy in a state of anxiety and frustration that will make him more susceptible to making irrational decisions and depressed as he is about to face his sons when they are planning to take him out to a nice dinner for all of their upcoming "successes".

After being fired, Willy can find comfort in the song, "Take a Chance on Me" by Abba because of its optimistic tone and it make Willy feel more capable than he actually is at the moment. Some of the lyrics include, "Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around" (ABBA). This illuminates the fact that Willy feels as though he has never done anything to lose trust with his bosses and that he is more than capable of handling his job. He also has spent his whole life in the area that he would never desert or hurt his company if a new opportunity were to appear for him again. He just wants to take care of his family and he wishes Howard would see that.

His wife Linda exclaims at Biff and Happy, "He's planting the garden!" (125). The family immediately understands that Willy is desperate to make something of himself and that his entire life is falling apart and will amount to nothing. The idea of Willy lacking a legacy motivates him to feel impulsive and desperate because he does not feel as though he can continue to function if he has nothing to offer. This puts Willy in an ultimate state of depression and makes him feel insignificant and that he has no purpose in the world.

As Willy is panicking and planting his garden, he can find comfort in the song, "The World Was Wide Enough" from the musical, Hamilton. Particular lyrics to listen to are, "Legacy. What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see... Teach me how to say goodbye" (Lin Manuel Miranda). This song captures the essence of crisis by showing how desperate people are to leave a legacy on Earth before they die and want to know that when they do say their final farewell, it will not be in vain. It offers wisdom that every man struggles to accept living a mediocre life and that they should always be doing more. Leaving a legacy is rare for all people because one must accept people can't live to see their life's work and legacy flourish and must have faith in the proudness of their lives and accomplishments.

At the end of the novel, Willy distressingly contemplates with Ben on if he should kill himself so that his family can receive twenty thousand dollars from insurance and start fresh. He feels as though this is the best solution to all of their troubles and Willy will no longer be a hazard for anyone, and instead is doing a great service for all of his family. Willy also believes that his death will be astounding and that everyone will support him at his funeral. Willy declares, "...That funeral will be massive... I am known!" Willy's fanciful idea of ending his life to help others puts him in a state that doesn't make him realize that ending his life will severely damage Linda and his sons, and being caught up in the delusion of being well loved after death makes it a more plausible solution for Willy to result in suicide.

As Willy is contemplating how amazing death could be for him, a song to focus on would be "Mad World" by Tears for Fears. This song focuses on how life continues to pass by and everyone is drowning in repetition and how fear seems more exciting and a better alternative to living. A lyric to listen to is, "I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, The dreams in which I'm dying, Are the best I've ever had" (Tears for Fears). This lyric provides perspective and on the matter of death being a sound alternative in a time of people feeling unsatisfied with their current condition of life.
