In this chapter, Randy Pausch recalls being very upset when his mother called him Randolph instead of Randy. His mother always called him this name because she thought a classy Virginian would have it. Randy was so upset one day he confronted his mother and asked her if she thought that by giving him his name it is more important then him having his own identity. When Randy went to college he received mail from his mother with the name Randolph attached to it. Randy never opened the letter but sent them back to his mother. So Randy's mother wrote letters to him with R. Pausch on it.He accepted those letters. Randy realized that he appreciated his mother so much that he let her call him Randolph. He said 'life is too short".
