This week was our auditions for our Unit 9 - which is Lin-Manuel Miranda in concert. for this audition, we had to prepare 1-2 mins of a contemporary song from a musical. After some research, the song I settled on was "Don't do Sadness" from the musical Spring Awakening, for it's strong falsetto, and emotional message. The response for me using this as my audition piece was overall positive! After speaking with my director , she said to me she was happy this i picked this song. She said it was a great choice for my vocal range and capabilities, along with it's emotional vulnerability shining through as i draw from emotional memory throughout the song. Some key strong points were my strong falsetto and vocal flips, alongside a good mix on other phrases. It was her recommendation that this would become my go-to contemporary MT audition song moving forward to university/drama school auditions and auditions outside of college.

some areas of improvement that i noticed, however, were me messing up on some lines due to nerves. This is something that my director echoed, as she said I sounded nervous while singing. This seems to be a problem with my breath control, so will incorporate more breathing exercises into my warm-up routine in and out of college to fix this shortcoming. Overall, I feel very positive with how my audition went and cannot wait for rehearsals to start.

WEEK ONE - FINDING OUT ROLES, THEN "ALEXANDER HAMILTON" AND "THE SCHUYLER SISTERS" VOCALS (19/9/24)

This week was the beginning of our rehearsal process!! My director sent out the cast list the night before rehearsals begun. This is where i found out that i would be playing the roles of Aaron Burr in "Hamilton", Steven in "bring it on", and taking the vocals of Lin-Manuel Miranda himself in the Hamilton/Dear Evan Hansen mash-up "Found/Tonight". I was simply elated with this knowledge, and in utter shock and disbelief that I got some fantastic and iconic roles created by Lin- Manuel Miranda, and have so many ideas as to how I can bring those characters to life in my own way. My director said to me she gave me these opportunities as she thought I was up to the challenge, deeming my passion and desire I show in lessons. Then it was our first rehearsal day, where we began with listening to each of the songs in the setlist, before getting all the vocals for "Alexander Hamilton" done. This was a fun experience, while also proving to be challenging at times. Some things I did well in were my solo parts as Burr, and learning my harmonies. There were some places for improvement though, as i need to work on certain inflections in my speech to paint a better picture, and need to remember my harmonies moving forward. I will do this by rehearsing out of college hours to ensure this is in tip-top shape for when Jess begins to set it. We also did the vocals of "The Schuyler Sisters", where I received no negative notes on my performance, the only thing my director said was that i was portraying the character well. I will, however, ensure i know every lyric for the next time we do this number by rehearsing on my own time.

WEEK 2 - STAGING A.H, S.S VOCALS, AND WHAT I WAS BORN TO DO

In this week, we started by going over what we already had done, cleaning up and adding new harmonies, which I dealt with completely fine. Then in our second session, we were in the performance hall, beginning to stage our opening number, "Alexander Hamilton". This was so much fun to do, and we managed to get about halfway through the song. There were some slight notes as we went along though, while my characterisation was great and I made effective choices with facial expression and gesture, I had a habit of walking in time with the song, which I needed to not do, if I walked more naturally, then its more authentic and realistic. I worked on this in the session and its something to keep in mind moving forward.

Following this, we moved onto the vocals of "What I Was Born To Do" from the musical "Bring It On!". In this song, I was entrusted with the role of Steven. While the role is a lot of fun, it was one I had little to no knowledge of before getting assigned it, so adapting my choices as I learn more about him is a given. My director said i was doing well, but with some lines my rhythm was different to the original, which with it being a musical by Lin, that's definitely something that needs to be changed, especially when it wasn't adding anything to the character. I will listen to the song and rehearse to ensure that it will be better for our next rehearsal.

However, when talking to my duet partner Finley, we opted to make our costumes reflect both artists' (Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt) most iconic roles in our costumes, so mine is in reference to the role of Alexander Hamilton.
