One note can change everything in a piece. One note can be the difference between two different genres, two different songs, or two different artists. The length a note is held can affect the emotional impact it has on the listener or audience. Ratliff’s playlist for this includes “We R Who We R”, by acclaimed pop artist Ke$ha. The singular note she elaborates upon in the chorus allows for a wide range of positive emotions, such as elation, and a youthful feeling of optimism.

Where the specific note is placed can also affect the listener or audience. A specific note at the beginning can define the song, and draw the audience in. A note to transition from verse to chorus, or verse to bridge, can be instrumental in allowing the song to flow. A killer ending note is a sure way to make a song stick in a listener's mind.

In this Padlet, there are two songs which I feel have a specific note that defines them. The pictures included are to illustrate the feelings that a particular note can give you.

So you're listening to a nice, pleasant song about bunnies and rainbows and running in the rain with your best guy/girl at your side. Then the final note of the song falls and, instead of a nice soft resolution, it's a heavily played sting note in a minor scare chord. Then the music fades into a series of dissonant arpeggios with a creepy mechanical voice muttering some nonsensical gibberish that sounds like Satan reciting an Edgar Allan Poe story. It's surely not the ending you expected this particular song to have — and if you happen to be really unlucky, it'll burrow into your mind playing itself over and over like some self-regenerating nightmare fuel. Musicians most likely put these kinds of stingers at the ends of their songs to make them memorable.
