Question 7: How important is the role of sound effects, such as rhyme and rhythm? How do they affect tone and meaning?

The rhyme and rhythm give a story-like characteristic. Similar to a children's book with it's upbeat rhythm however, the vocabulary is targeted more towards adults. It adds to the tone by accentuating the results of telling the truth at once. In the lines, "As Lightning to the Children eased with explanation kind the Truth must dazzle gradually or every man be blind –" it's tempo and rhyme gives it's meaning more weight, making the lines memorable.

Question 4: What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

Dickinson uses diction to write the line, "as lighting to the Children eased with explanation kind," to express how if you explain lighting to children, they'll be less scared of it. Meaning, you shouldn't slam someone with the truth, but ease them into it. She also uses personification to describe the truth, in the last lines Dickinson wrote, "the truth must dazzle gradually or every man be blind." Dazzling personifies the truth meaning to tell the truth little by little or it might overwhelm people and they won't accept it.

Question 1: What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The tone that Emily creates is cautious, telling the reading how to go about telling the truth. Words like "infirm" and "gradually" give the poem a wary tone, hinting to consequences if precautions are not taken. The poem's tone can also be interpreted as worrisome, explaining the complexities of the truth in the line, "Success in Circuit lies" saying that the only way to successfully tell the truth is to tell in a indirect, soft way.

Question 6: What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of this poem is to tell the truth, but not all of it, or the person will not accept or fully understand it. Dickinson starts off the poem saying, "tell all the truth but tell it slant," slant means to say it indirectly. This line means to tell the person the truth but don't tell too much or they won't be able to grasp it. The next two lines say, "Too bright for our infirm Delight," mean that the truth is too heavy for us to understand it all at once so we should tell it slowly.
