G7C26 - Significant Individuals of the Renaissance (GIRLS) by

Class Activity: Drawing the Universe
Objective:
•	You'll compare and understand the shift from the Earth-centered model to the Sun-centered model of the universe.
Materials Needed:
•	Drawing paper
•	Pencils or markers
Directions:
•	Take a piece of paper and draw two circles. On the left side, put the Earth in the center with other planets and the Sun orbiting it—that's your geocentric model. On the right side, put the Sun at the center with the Earth and other planets orbiting it—that's your heliocentric model.
Label the Drawings:
•	Make sure to label the Earth, Sun, and a few planets on each side so we can tell what’s what.
Quick Discussion and Reflection:
•	Think about how discovering that the Sun is at the center might have changed science. We'll have a couple of you share your thoughts.

It has an interesting smile that people talk about a lot. The painting looks kind of hazy because of a special painting technique called sfumato. It's kept in a big museum in Paris. Leonardo was really smart and used math to make the picture look like it goes far back into the distance. People still really like looking at this painting even today!

The idea that Earth was the center of the universe was the main belief long ago. People thought everything, like the Sun, stars, and planets, moved around Earth. But then, a guy named Copernicus said, "Wait a minute, what if the Sun is at the center and Earth goes around it?" This idea changed how we see the universe and made us think differently about science and space.

Copernicus one day mentioned his idea of the sun being the center of the universe, but this idea wasn’t taken into consideration till later on in history as before people used to believe that the earth was the center of the universe. Even though this information wasn’t backed up with any accurate data, scientist had to look in and observe the statement Copernicus made. Since the accurate evidence that the sun is the center of our solar system. We were able to calculate the time distance to cover or orbit the sun. This gave us the innovation of time, weather, date, and many more exclusive data. And since the sun has the greatest mass it is obvious that its gravitational pull is so strong it holds all the objects in the solar system together making each planet stable, this prevents the planets from floating off in different directions in space. And since we were able to calculate the time of the starting point and ending point of each orbit, scientists were able to classify four season which are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. However if the Earth was in the center of our solar system it will attract lots of heat and thermal energy due to its close distance towards the sun and its small amount of mass. Compared to the sun the earth is very small and does not stand a chance when the sun is about 109 times the diameter of Earth! And since the heat will increase sudden volcanic eruptions and activity will be seen and heard more often. And this theory would have to be distinguished as the Earth would need to be larger than the sun and other planets including the sun would need to become smaller. This is why this new information became a significant and impactful discovery for not only NASA, or scientist but also for humans.
