It was a week before school started and all freshman were invited to come to the campus. Here we obtained knowledge we would require to survive high school. The leaders of this escapade were none other than link crew. They, being from this unfamiliar world, decided that they would help us newcomers in our next challenge. The supernatural aid from any ‘hero’s’ journey is someone/something from the unknown world- in this case high school- aiding the hero before he or she crosses over, as link crew did for us.

Crossing the Threshold

The first day of school was upon us and we, the freshman class of 2018 came to high school for the first time as a part of the school. We left behind the simple junior high classes in favor of more specific and challenging courses. We crossed the threshold from middle school to high school and at this point there was no going back.

Abyss

Finals, dreaded finals were upon all walks of life in San Marcos High School. First semester was rapidly drawing to a close and every student was cramming, desperately attempting to obtain the knowledge needed to pass with the grade we desired. This is one of the most dreaded days, second only to the finals at the end of the year, students have to face. It is the end of all grades, there was no going back from the grade you received here. Much like in the abyss of a fictional character’s journey, we faced the worst challenge of all- the hardest test owing to the maximum amount of studying. It was here that we faced our climaxes and had revelations about the depths of our abilities.

Gift from the Goddess

Finals were over, for better or for worse. We, the students of San Marcos High School, anxiously checked our grades with either exasperation or relief. Personally, I was neither relieved nor exasperated at the turn of events due to confidence and calculations prior to finals. As a reward for our hardships, we were given a break by the school district. Three-weeks off from school with no more homework or tests and relaxation spelled out in golden letters in front of us. This is comparable to the ‘gift from the goddess’ demonstrated in many books. In both the hero or heroes are given compensation for their efforts. Instead of a medal or power, we got a well deserved break.

Thomas- Maze Runner's Supernatural Aid

(*SPOILER ALERT*) When Thomas was a boy he was 'saved', or rather taken by the company Wicked. Wicked was intent on finding a cure on the virus that swept the Earth after the solar flares. This company was positive that he had the cure in his mind and body as he was immune. They gave Thomas the tools he needed to survive in the real world and the Glade- they had Thomas build it himself- so that when he encountered it personally he would be ready.

Thomas's Crossing the Threshold

When Thomas was dropped into the Glade with no memory of his past or who he was, he crossed the threshold. He left the world of despair and chaos to another that was its own society within itself, entirely protected from the outside.

The Abyss for Thomas

(*SPOILER ALERT*) Thomas's abyss was the final fight with the Grievers. He left behind a multitude of people, taking only those who would come with him, and they journeyed down the griever's hole. Our heroes faced death as some of the Gladers died and others didn't make it through the portal.

Thomas's Gift from the Goddess

In the duration of the novel, The Maze Runner, the one thing the Gladers desire most is information, not escape- as is alluded in the book. They are willing to risk their lives to understand: who they are, why they're here, and who put them here. If they had known this prior to them finding a way out of the Glade, they may or may not have still left. The end of the book is met with despair and apprehension by both the characters and the readers. The one positive take on this is that they DO find out their questions. The reaction from this point on is debatable. All the same, for their efforts Thomas and the other boys (and girl) are given knowledge.
