This week, Dr. gave an explanation about the introduction to tourism geography which includes the definition of tourism and other things. Dr. also said that the tourism sector is closely related to geography and the interdependence of each other. Without geography, we would not know the demographics of the population in a area. What caught my attention the most was GISGeography because it was something new to me. GISGeography allows me to know an area in more detail with longitude and latitude.

TUTORIAL:

Explain why Leiper's Tourism System Model (1979) necessitates three(3) distinct geographical elements.

-Leiper's model explains that a tourism journey can only occur when there are three essential parts the tourist's place of origin, the route taken, and the destination. The place of origin or TGR is the place where the tourist decides to travel. The TRR is the travel route such as the airport or road that connects them to the destination. Finally, the TDR is the place with attractions that the tourist wants to visit. Without any of these three parts, tourism would not occur because each plays an interrelated role.

Compare the geographical roles of the Tourism Generating Region (TGR) and the Tourism Destination Region (TDR), specifically focusing on how push factors operate in the TGR and pull factors operate in the TDR.

-In tourism, push factors come from the tourist's place of origin (TGR). For example, someone may want to go on vacation because of stress, want a break from work, or want to find new experiences. That is why they are motivated to leave their place of origin. Meanwhile, pull factors come from the tourist destination (TDR), such as beautiful beaches, unique culture, or interesting food. The combination of these two factors is what causes someone to actually decide to travel there is a reason to go, and there is an interesting place to go.

Explain how the distinct cultural geographies of Tokyo (DC) and Langkawi island (DVC) manifest as different pull factors, and relate this difference to the respective levels of economic development.

-Tokyo and Langkawi have very different atmospheres and cultures, and these differences are what make both of them interesting. Tokyo is known as a modern city with high technology, a fast paced lifestyle, and a developed entertainment center. It fits in with Japan's high level of economic development. Meanwhile, Langkawi is more calm and rich in nature and a strong Malay culture. It attracts tourists who want to relax, enjoy the beauty of the beach, or get to know the local culture. So, we can see that the economic development of a place greatly influences the type of tourism that exists there.

Discuss how the challenges of spatial planning in Tokyo might differ significantly from those in Langkawi island due to the scale and primary type of tourism activity (e,g., bussiness vs. heritage leisure) dominant in each.

-Tokyo faces major challenges in spatial planning due to its large size and dense population. Authorities need to manage congestion, pollution, and the balance between development and urban sustainability. For Langkawi, the challenge is more about preserving the environment and local culture. Tourism development needs to be done carefully so that natural beauty and community identity are not affected. In short, Tokyo needs to focus on efficient urban management, while Langkawi needs to emphasize sustainable tourism that preserves nature and heritage.

This week, Dr. has explained the history, basic concepts and background of tourism. Dr. also told that the first world map was the Babylonian map. A brief definition of tourism is according to Niel Leiper (1979), tourism is a system involving tourists, areas of origin, travel routes and destinations, and is supported by the tourism industry. Earlier travel was essentilly to seek food or to escape danger. These early travellers moved on foot, they were limited to quite small geographical areas. early travel to America took place from 1651 to 1851 by riding various types of vehicles such as horseback, stagecoach, steamboat, train and covered wagon. Dr. also told that Mecca is the most crowded place every year for the purpose of travel to perform the Hajj. That's all for this week.

Mecca is a very historic place especially for Muslims. This is where a prophet named Muhammad was born. Mecca is a place of worship called hajj and umrah which have been carried out by Muslims for centuries. This has led to local development and the development of increasingly developed infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of visitors from year to year. This type of tourism is a type of religious tourism.
