Hazel's lover who's extremely optimistic. Like Hazel, he also has a unique mindset that makes him think about many situations. His attitude is cocky and bold but has a loving side.

The Metaphor

The day Hazel first met Augustus, he put a cigarette between his teeth which pissed her off. Gus then told her he never lit one and that it was a metaphor: "You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do it's killing."

An Imperial Affliction

Hazel's favorite book which she shares with Augustus. The book is about a girl who had cancer. An Imperial Affliction is different from other books because the ending cuts off as if the main character died. Hazel relates this to many situations.

Amsterdam

Gus brings Hazel on a trip to Amsterdam to meet Peter Can Houten, the author of the book An Imperial Affliction. The trip had many important moments and deeply bonded Hazel and Gus.

Cancer Returns

After the trip to Amsterdam, Augustus's cancer returns causing him to be in immense pain as he struggles to live. He tries to buy a pack of cigarettes himself but ends up getting the G-tube disconected from his stomach.

The Eulogy

Augustus calls Hazel and Isaac (his best friend) to the Literal Heart of Jesus for them to present to him his eulogy. Gus knew he was about to die but wanted to hear what the people he loved the most felt about that.

Augustus's Death

A few days after the eulogy, Augustus died. Hazel and Isaac had tried to recover and knew it was coming, but were still hurt. Hazel loved him while he lasted and at the funeral she met Van Houten again. She told him he wasn't the author of An Imperial Affliction anymore and that he was just an old alchoholic with no life.

Augustus's Letter to Hazel

After Gus's death, Hazel remembered how he said he would write a better ending to An Imperial Affliction. Hazel then looks for it and discovered a letter he wrote to Van Houten about her, which leads to the ending of the book.
