The British were warned early by their codebreakers and put both forces Beatty’s and Jellicoe’s to sea early. The Germans damaged Beatty’s flagship, HMS Lion, and sank HMS Indefatigable and HMS Queen Mary, both of which blew up when German shells penetrated their ammunition magazines. Beatty withdrew until Jellicoe arrived with the main fleet. The Germans, now outgunned, turned for home. They won because they were warned early about Germany’s ambush on Beatty’s force and Jellicoe’s and set off both at the same time to mess up their plan. But Germany lost less troops than Britain and Britain only got naval dominance and secured its own shipping lanes which was thought to already to be had. So in reality they didn't get anything until later when they implementyed a blockade which helped stop Germany in 1918.
