Typically, long ships were made of wood and they were light, long and narrow. The reason for this was that the ships could move easily without additional support. Many ships were made to withstand fierce ocean rage. Also, the intricate nordic, knotted, criss-cross pattern wrapped around the perimeter of the ship, implying that they did to state their mark. In addition, ships were made watertight by filling in the gaps between the planks with either wool, moss or animal hair. The Viking long ships are a prime example of what a well-designed and well-built form of transport as many boats and water vehicles are made primarily in the structure of the years between 700 and 1000s. Vikings decorated the prow (front) of the ship was decorated with a carving of an animal head, either a dragon or snake head. Skilled craftsmen would imprint elaborate and intricate designs into the wood. The original reason for doing this was to make their territory and make a statement for other raiders.

The long ships were used for travelling, raiding and exploring new land, these ships could hold 35 to about 70 vikings, along with food, weapons tools and more. They were used for voyaging around Scandinavia, so the Vikings wouldn't need to climb over the mountains. Furthermore also to places like England, Ireland, Greenland and Scotland. They also used the rivers with smaller ships to travel down south. They also traveled to America a whole 4,500 miles, they are thought to be the first Europeans to travel to America.

The design was long sometimes thin or a bit wider then some. They were made to ensure speed, a shallow dec, weight, capacity, manoeuvrability and waterproof. They had to be able to withstand long voyages and to be able to get through an ocean storm. They were mostly made out of wood and had some sort of covering over for water protection, the oars were made out of wood with little stubs on the edge to ensure they didn’t slip into the water. The flags were made out of sheet - most likely sheep’s fur.

[Longships] were important for the vikings expansion as land travel was near impossible and as colonies got bigger the vikings needed more land. Ships helped them to trade in countries such as Russia and helped discover Iceland, Greenland and America.
