Many of the polling programs are able to be built directly into a presentation. By doing this, you can easily poll the students without wasting time to pass out materials or switch programs. This make the poll easy and fast and gives you real time data will minimum distraction. Many of these can also be shared through a link. When doing this it is best use a URL Shortener or a QR Code to share the link. This speeds up the process even more and makes it easy for students to get the necessary link. Another important benefit of polling activities in the classroom is that it gives students a break in the learning and lets them assess their own learning. Students are able to check in and see what they know and what they need more clarification on.

DeLoatch, P.

In the past I have used Flipgrid for the KWL activity. On Flipgrid I gave students a topic and they recorded videos of their K (know) and W (wish to know) parts of the subject. Other students in the class are then able to comment on the videos and post replies that add to it. At the end of the unit or activity I did the same thing for the L (Learning) part, and students gave video reflections of what they learned during the process. This tool can also be used on interactive whiteboards. Students can post their responses during the project and in the end the KWL table becomes an interactive record of student learning across the entire unit.

Lauzon, N.

Online graphic organizers are great for getting students thinking critically about the material. But because many of these tools offer so much customization, I have found that it is best to do this activity in two parts. Any I use a new technology or program in my classroom, I either give students a chunk of time to play with it, or I have them create sometime that isn't tied to the material. An example of this would be when i used MindMeister in Geometry class to compare polygons and their properties. First I started slow by having the students create a graphic organizer of their family tree. This topic was easy and student didn't have to think a lot about what they would write. This allowed them to focus on how to create things using MindMeister. After they became acquainted with the program, we then started on the content related graphic organizer.

Upon further research, I learned that graphic organizers are tool specifically designed for scaffolding and only work if students have not achieved independence competence on the material. If this tool is used after this point, it will disengage students as the relationships and connections will have already been established. The best time for implementation is at the beginning of the unit.

Martin, D.

Although I have not used word splash/word clouds often, I know several teachers who have. When using these tools, many teachers I have spoken with reported it as a powerful tool combined with writing. They would give the students multiple articles or have the students find articles on a specific topic. They would then, with out having the students take the article, have them create a word cloud of the text. From here they would have students do a reflective paper over what they observed in the word cloud. They would use framing questions like, "what words stood out?", "What do you think the article was about?" "How do the selected words pertain to the article?" "What do the words in the cloud tell you about the article or the anthers position?" By using this strategy in the manner, teachers are able to get students thinking about the articles and what words/phrases are important within the text.

Through my research, I also learned that student can use word clouds for self assessment of their writings. Because young writers tend to over use words, word clouds are a great way to check students papers. By creating a word cloud, it allows students to instantly see what words are overused in their papers.

Tumelty, S.
