The goal was to send this letter out to the government to try end segregation that they had felt was very discriminative towards to them. They weren’t being treated as fairly as whites so they wanted to send this message to the government that they are very unhappy about the way the government is treating the colored people.

These trusts are holding onto as much money as they can instead of being fair and paying their workers good wages. As a result, many people are becoming pair and having no money to take care of their families.

It is imperative to know the historical context of the image, which is the tenement housing, and how muckrakers like Riis decided to expose the injustices that came along with the time period. This example of a muckraker is proof that people wanted to make change. In addition, the intense reaction of surprise from the rest of the world when they saw those pictures is evidence that these change making people were a new phenomenon.

The historical context described in the excerpt is important to consider because it shows how despite progressive reform movements were changing many aspects of society, there were still continuities. The excerpt mentions segregation, a system made by Jim Crow laws which separated black people from white people. Despite attempts to reform this system, none were able to succeed during this era. This marks a continuity of racial segregation in the Progressive Era as reformers failed to make change towards stopping segregation.

The historical context is important in recognizing the change progressive era reformers made politically towards trusts in their time. The corporations Roosevelt refers to in his speech dominated the majority of the Gilded Era, which companies like the Standard Oil Company eliminating competition via horizontal integration and trusts having political influence in the Senate. In this speech, Roosevelt talks about controlling these corporations and limiting their power, which marks a change of limiting trusts power politically in the US.

This is clear because the woman her and her family are asking people to vote dry for their sake while the brewer is asking people to vote wet for his sake. This cartoon is meant to show who is affected by the prohibition and try to get people to vote dry by appealing to their emotions and compassion for mothers and their families.

The NAACP highlights the negative aspects of the policy in order to persuade president Wilson to get rid of the policy and allow colored and white workers to coexist. This is made clear by the NAACP’s word choice in recognizing why Wilson may believe the policy is beneficial and than rebutting these arguments with why the policy will be detrimental to colored workers.
