<title>Very little sunlight penetrates the trees and vegetation covering the Amazon rain forest floor. Minimal plant life grows due to the lack of sunlight, and most deceased life forms decay quickly due to the high humidity. Animals such as scorpions, iguanas and army ants are found living throughout the forest floor layer. Army ants are dangerous ants who eat almost anything, from other insects to large mammals. Iguanas eat insects but prefer to climb trees to have access to plant matter such as leaves and flowers.</title>

<title>The rainforest floor is often dark and humid due to constant shade from the canopy’s leaves. Despite its constant shade, the rainforest floor is an important part of the forest ecosystem. The forest floor is where decomposition takes place. Decomposition is the process by which fungi and microorganisms break down dead plants and animals and recycle essential materials and nutrients. Also, many of the largest rainforest animals are found on the forest floor. Some of these are elephants (in Asia), the tapir (Southeast Asia and Central and South America), tigers (Asia), and the jaguar (Central and South America).</title>

<title>he forest floor, also called detritus, duff and the O horizon, is one of the most distinctive features of a forest ecosystem. It mainly consists of shed vegetative parts, such as leaves, branches, bark, and stems, existing in various stages of decomposition above the soil surface. Although principally composed of non-living organic material, the forest floor also teems with a wide variety of fauna and flora. It is one of the richest components of the ecosystem from the standpoint of biodiversity because of the large number of decomposers and predators present, mostly belonging to invertebrates, fungi, algae, bacteria, and archaea. Certain (adapted) plants may be more apparent in tropical forests, where rates of metabolism and species diversity are much higher than in colder climates. The major compartments for the storage of organic matter and nutrients within systems are the living vegetation, forest floor, and soil. The forest floor serves as a bridge between the above ground living vegetation and the soil, and it is a crucial component in nutrient transfer through the biogeochemical cycle. Much of the energy and carbon fixed by forests is periodically added to the forest floor through litterfall, and a substantial portion of the nutrient requirements of forest ecosystems is supplied by decomposition of organic matter in the forest floor and soil surface. The sustained productivity of forests is closely linked with the decomposition of shed plant parts, particularly the nutrient-rich foliage. The forest floor is also an important fuel source in forest fires.</title>

<title>CompositionThe amount of material in the forest floor depends on the balance between inputs from litter production and outputs from decomposition, and amounts also reflect the site&#39;s disturbance history. Both litter production and decomposition are functions of the site (e.g., wet versus dry; cold versus warm; nutrient rich versus nutrient poor) and the vegetation that occupies the site (e.g., conifer versus broadleaf). A site&#39;s forest floor is determined by its areal weight, depth, and nutrient content. Typically, forest floors are heaviest and deepest in boreal forests and mountain forests where decomposition rates are slow. In contrast, the lightest and thinnest forest floors usually occur in tropical forests where decomposition rates are rapid, except on white sands where nutrients could not be supplied from mineral weathering.Temperate forestsBluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Pryor&#39;s Wood, Stevenage)The organic layer is divided into three layers: on the surface is the leaf litter formed by undecomposed vegetable matter; underneath is humus which is the product of decomposed vegetable matter. Between litter and humus is a partially decomposed layer of organic matter (&quot;F: fragmented organic materials&quot;)[1] [2]. Some specialists consider this zone to be equivalent to the soil horizon (O) whereas for others, this only includes the humus and the intermediate layer, excluding the litter. With up to three defined canopy layers above, relatively low levels of sunlight (as little as 2%) reach here.[3] Examples of the wide range of plants adapted to this zone include: spike mosses, gingers and the parasitic Rafflesia spp.</title>

<title>Plant growth in the Understory Layer is limited to mostly smaller trees, low lying shrubs, ferns, climbing plants and native bananas. Research indicates that plants do not usually grow past 12 feet (3.6 meters) in this layer. There are a relatively small amount of flowering plants in the Understory Layer. The plants that do flower are often brightly colored so they can be seen easily in such surroundings by pollinators, and strongly scented so they can attract pollinators with their smell. This layer of the rainforest produces many popular house plants. Zebra plants, Ferns, Philodendrons and Prayer plants are among some of house plants from this layer that do well in dimly lit conditions.Tree trunks in this layer tend to be thin because they are usually younger, smaller trees growing in this layer. All shapes, size, colors and textures of tree trunks can be found here. Moss, fungus and algae are usually found growing on the trees, often giving the appearance of different shades or colors on the same tree.Climbing plants also do well in this environment. They begin by germinating on the Forest floor and then use a host tree to facilitate a steady upwards growth until they reach the adequate sunlight they require.</title>

<title>There are almost no shrubs in this layer. There is about 0-2% light that reaches the forest floor. There is about 100% humidity. Because of the weather conditions only plants that can survive in deep shade can grow and live here. Moses herbs and fungi live here. The forest floor holds all of the organisms and left over things that turn into useable nutrients. For example on the forest floor a leaf can decompose in about six weeks compared to mild sunny weather where it would take about one year. In this layer termites, cockroaches, centipedes, millipedes, earthworms, scorpions, live here. They insects use the organic litter on the forest floor as nutrients. Reptiles also live in this layer. The reptiles hide on logs and in the brush by camouflaging themselves into the scenery. Some reptiles are; lizards, spiny iguana, snakes, frogs, and turtles. </title>

It then drops from above onto its prey below.Tree frogs and Salamanders require a lot of humidity to keep their skin from drying out so they do well in the Understory Layer. There are approximately 150 species of butterflies that live in the Understory</title>

<title>There are four layers found in a rainforest. The emergent layer has trees that reach above-average heights compared to other trees in the rainforest; some trees can grow to 200 feet or more. Insects, bats, and birds are found living in the emergent layer. The canopy is the next layer, which is made up of trees between 100-150 feet. The canopy is home to lots of tree-dwelling plants and animals. In the canopy you will find spider monkeys, lemurs, sloths, parrots, and toucans. Those animals get most of their food in the canopy and rarely leave that layer.Under the canopy is the understory. That is where leaves of trees are large (due to the diminished amount of sunlight filtering through the upper layers) and is where many insects live. The last layer of the rainforest is the floor. That area only gets a very small percentage of the sunlight filtering through the upper layers. It is mostly covered with small plants and decomposing vegetation and is the domain of land-dwelling animals.</title>

<title>Rainforests.mongabay.com states that the largest group of mammals on the rainforest floor consists of the jungle cats. Each rainforest, except for Australia, has its own cat species. The largest is the tiger, but it is threatened by extinction due to loss of habitat; there are five species of tiger left living in rainforests. The Bengal or Indian tiger is the most common.Jaguars also live on the rainforest floor and can be found in Amazon rainforests. The jaguar is endangered due to over hunting for its fur. Jaguars eat frogs, fish, turtles, deer, and caiman. Jaguars are great swimmers and like to fish and hunt at night.Leopards also live in rainforests from Asia to Africa and are smaller cats. Pumas are an even smaller species. The ocelot can sometimes be found in the rainforests of South and Central America, and is about the size of a typical housecat.</title>

<title>There is only a specific region on the planet, usually around the equator, where tropical rainforests exist. Tropical Rainforests exist when conditions are humid, warm, and wet with rainfall totaling 8-14 feet (2.44-4.27 meters) per year. What makes tropical rainforests so interesting are the unique climate conditions found there and the four distinct rainforest layers of vegetation. When you read the kid-friendly facts below, you&#39;ll discover why the Emergent, Canopy, Understudy, and Forest Floor layers are all important to the ecosystem of the rainforest. Click here for a great selection of Amazon.com books about tropical rainforests. In this category of Tropical Rainforest Facts we list interesting facts about the four distinct layers of rainforest vegetation. On this page we have an overview of these layers and here you will find links to more detailed information pages about each layer including the plant (flora) and animal life that exist there.Emergent Layer FactsOversized trees reaching heights of 150-250 feet (45.7-76.2 meters) tall are found in the Emergent Layer. Together, the top branches and leaves from Emergent layer trees form an umbrella or mushroom shape above the thick Canopy layer below. The tree trunks are as impressive as the height of the tree, with circumferences reaching 16 feet (4.9 meters).Common animals found living at the Emergent Level include sloths, monkeys, bats, birds, and butterflies.Bright sunlight mixed with high temperatures causes many of the tree tops to become burnt.Canopy Layer FactsThe main layer of a tropical rainforest is the Canopy Layer. At 60-90 feet (18.29-27.43 meters) above the ground, it gets its name from the thick dense covering layer it forms over the bottom two layers. Many leaves and branches intertwine in a maze-like fashion to form this layer where sunlight becomes more limited.Food is plentiful in the Canopy Layer and is therefore home to most of the animals and organisms of the rainforest. Tree frogs, Toucans, Coati, and snakes are commonly found here. Because of the densely packed trees and branches, many animals seek this level for shelter as well.Understory Layer FactsAs the third level from the sunlight, the Understory Level is quite dark. It only gets 2-15% of the sunlight that reaches the layers above. The Understory Layer has a heavy concentration of insects. The hot, damp and humid conditions in this layer are perfect for mosquitoes and other insects to breed and thrive.Red-eyed tree frogs, Jaguars, Leopards, Fruit Bats, Boa Constrictors (among others) all live in the Understory Layer and all use camouflage to disguise themselves.Common house plants that don&#39;t require much light such as zebra plants, peace lilies, and philodendrons come from the Understory Layer.Forest Floor Layer FactsBecause of the extreme lack of sunlight that is able to penetrate into the Forest Floor Layer, very little is able to grow here. The air is humid and there is no wind or breeze.Leaves and other organic matter decay very quickly in such a dark, damp and still environment. Fungi can feed on the decaying matter as can numerous types of small insects.Scorpions, Green Iguanas, Army Ants, Giant Armadillos, and Giant Anteaters are all foragers who are well adapted to digging their flood out of the ground. These types of animals thrive in a habitat such as the Forest Floor. They do spend a lot of time looking at the ground which can make them easy targets for predators.MENUHomeTropical Rainforest Emergent Layer FactsTropical Rainforest Canopy Layer FactsTropical Rainforest Understory Layer FactsTropical Rainforest Floor Layer Facts</title>
