9/17 Thesis Statement by Melissa Beran Taft

Write a thesis statement base on the following prompt. Don't forget the TAG in the thesis statement! Many works of literature feature a character who may be reluctant to make a decision, unable to make a decision, or is resistant to doing so. This indecision can have broader implications for that character or other characters. Such implications may include changes to a character’s relationships, social and/or financial stability, well-being, or any other aspects of the character’s existence. Either from your own reading or from the list below, choose a work of fiction in which a character delays or avoids making a decision. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze how the impact of this indecision contributes to an interpretation of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.

In the dystopian novel 1984 by George Orwell, the main character Winston is reluctant to rebel against big brother - the main antagonist in the story. His reluctance was not due to a lack of hate or rebellious nature, but rather the fear of what would happen to him if he did rebel and was caught. His fear would end of becoming a reality, as eventually he rebeled with Julia and was later caught. He was then tortured for 2 years into thinking that big brother was the only thing he cared about.

In the memoir novel"Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight, the author & main protagonist comes across a decision that will decide the future of his company, Nike inc, and potentially risk everyone he cares for lives. Knight had the decision to either get numerous smaller athletes to be sponsors for the brand or risk his career and all of his company's budget on betting it all on Michael Jordan. He had a vision of Jordan becoming one of the greatest of all time, and he wanted to join that dream. However, he knew the risks involved with going after him--especially since Jordan was already heavily leaning towards bigger competitors at the time in the basketball industry, Adidas and Converse, and they were offering bigger deals. Knight pushed through to enact his vision and created a shoe line meant for Jordan, Air Jordans, while giving him a deal no one had ever offered before--which was giving athletes a percentage of profits. This risk turned Nike into one of, if not the biggest, shoe companies ever.
