He thought his dad might have trouble getting into his car the next morning, so he left a note on the door.

This was like a true chapter book that we are used to reading where there is an exposition, rising action, climax (sinking ship), and resolution (getting saved by the Carpathia). The words in this story were about the same level of difficulty as those in the Magic Treehouse book, but there were a lot more feelings and emotions in this story. The time and place also jumped around a lot, which makes this story harder to comprehend than any of the other books so far. There were only were only 8 photos, but there were 96 pages total. I counted the number of words on a page without a photo, and there were 129 words on that page.

While exploring, George meets the architect of the ship, a little boy named Enzo, and hears rumors that someone was transporting a mummy so he went out in the middle of the night to find it. While he was down there he heard the loud noise the ship made when it hit the ice burg, but no one look concerned so he went back up to bed.

Aunt Daisy realized Phoebe was missing when one of the employees tell everyone to get on deck.They followed her trail of lemon that she left until they reach a gate where the poorer passengers were locked. Aunt Daisy convinced a crew member let them through and with the help of Enzo and his father, they found Phoebe in the crowd. Back on deck, his sister, aunt, and Enzo were all placed on a lifeboat, but George and Marco had to stay behind finding a piece of wood in the water to float on until they could be saved by the Carpathia where they are reunited with the rest of their family and friends.

Back in America, Marco is treated in the hospital and George realize there is something going on between him and his aunt. When he goes back to the farm with Papa, he still experiences a lot of PTSD, so his Papa suggest they build a small boat in the pond to give him hope.

All of the words were very simple words that are perfect for kids who are just learning to read. If the child doesn’t know what the word is just by looking at it, most of the words are very short and easy to sound out. The story had a clear conflict (the alligator under his bed) and resolution (tricking him into going in the garage), but their wasn’t much emotion or details in the text, so most of the story was actually told with the pictures rather than the words.

I also think the words in this book were a little bit more challenging than those in “There’s an Alligator Under my Bed”, but there was a lot of repetition which makes reading easier. While Jack is looking at a dinosaur book, he says “I wish we could go here.” When they look out the window, they saw a  giant flying dinosaur called a Pterodactyl and they realized they went back in time. When they get out of the treehouse, they see a triceratops and some eggs. Annie picks a flower and they walk down to the nests. The triceratops eats the flower out of her hand and then looks up to find a Tyrannosaurus. After running away, Jack gets trapped by the Tyrannosaurus and has to ride the Pterodactyl back to the tree house. Jack then says “I wish we could go here” while looking at a picture of the treehouse back at home, and then the treehouse spins and they are right back in the real world at the same time that they left.

I unfortunately didn’t have a hard copy of this book, so I had to listen to an audiobook online. He showed the pictures through out the book, and I counted only 15 which isn’t very many considering there are 80 pages total. This book also had 10 chapters. On on of the pages I found online, there were 135 words on the page which is many more words than the books for ages 5-7. The words were also a bit more complicated, but still words that would be easy to sound out and read around in order to figure out what they mean. This story didn’t really have a direct conflict or resolution, it was more so just explaining their adventure. This story had a lot more details and emotion within the text, so that told the story more than the photos. Her boss didn’t like kids, so she had to be sent to her Aunt Minnie’s house in Florida. She was told it was going to be beautiful there, but when she arrived, she saw trash everywhere, and though her Aunt lived in a dump. 

Turtle felt rejected by her grandma, Nana Philly, and her cousins (who she calls the diaper gang). After a while turtle realized that the diaper gang didn’t bother her as much as they used to, so she asked them to help her find the treasure on a map she found. On the island the map lead to, they struck big and found gold, but then a hurricane came and they got trapped on the island.

When the hurricane calmed down they got rescued and Turtle's mom came there and brought her new husband, Archie. He promises to buy them a big house in Georgia so they can all eat peaches and be happy, but he ends up stealing the gold and leaving them all alone. Her mom was obviously very upset and so was Turtle, but she realizes that they still get to stay with her Aunt Minnie and cousins. Turtle knew it wasn’t the perfect fairytale ending, but she was happy anyways.

Just like “I Survived: The Sinking of the Titanic”, this story also had an exposition, rising action, climax (getting trapped on the island by the hurricane), and resolution (getting saved), but the plot was even more complex than that book. The words were harder than the books that were for ages 8-9. This book also had many complex emotions and internal conflicts displayed all throughout the book and there was a message that the author was telling the readers (sometimes there isn’t a happy ending, and you just have to be happy with what you have). This book had 177 pages with no pictures besides a few in the authors note at the end. His brother 6th grade Byron is considered the king of the school and their little sister Joey is in kindergarten. 

As the school year progresses, Byron starts getting into trouble by beating up Larry Dunn, setting things on fire, and killing a bird with a cookie. His mom and dad get pretty frustrated, but the final straw is when he gets his hair chemically straightened without permission. So, his parents tell him that the entire family is going to Birmingham where Momma grew up to visit Grandma Sands where Byron is going to stay all summer until he learns his lesson. 

At Grandma Sands's house, things are going great until Kenny goes against grandmas orders and Byron's requests and almost drowns in a winne the pooh whirlpool (Wool Pooh), but Byron saves him. Then while Joey is at church with the neighbors, a bomb goes off and the whole family can’t find her anywhere. Joey thinks the Wool Pooh got her, but they find her back at the house wondering where everyone is instead saying that she left before the bomb even went off.

That night the whole family packed up and went back to Flint. Everyone was experiencing a little bit of PTSD, but Kenny had the toughest time. He starts hiding behind the couch and Byron starts constantly checking on him, but Kenny loses it one day and starts crying uncontrollably explaining how he feels guilty for not saving Joey from the Wool Pooh like Byron saved him. Again, Byron comforts him this time saying that nothing was his fault and Joey feels much better.

The books start to consist of harder words, there are more words on every page, and more pages in a book. There start to be less and less pictures until they disappear completely. As children get older, not only does their ability to read and maintain focus become stronger, but so does their ability to understand serious problems and feelings. To keep up with their growth, the plots start to become more and more complex going from light conflicts like learning to swim, too deep struggles of guilt and bombing PTSD.
