Coming from a background where neither of my parents were high school graduates, I was not interested in school. It was not stressed that I make good grades and therefore the importance of school was simply not there. I was a poor reader which caused me to be retained in the first grade. I struggled even as I got into higher grade levels because of the lack of intervention due to the negligence or unnoticed issues that I was having in school. Because of this lack of education, I found myself relying on the government to assist me with housing and food for my family. I did not have the education to obtain employment that could bring in a decent income for me to support my family. I was raising four children on my own making almost eleven dollars an hour when I decided that I did not want to live off of the government. I did need their assistance for the next four years to make this happen and the doors opened up for this to happen. I was the first person in my immediate family to gain a college degree. This is my educational background experience.

I grew up in a single parent household. My parents divorced when I was five years old and I went on to live with my mother. She was a waitress and worked split shifts which put her pretty much gone all day, except for an hour or so a day. She would bring us food and check on us while she was on her short break. I was left to be watched by my older brothers or cousins, whoever was at the house at the time. I learned to pretty much fend for myself. I lacked guidance and encouragement in the things that would help me to live a successful and prosperous lifestyle. This was my early years experience in life.

Having lived in poverty and being uneducated for a numerous amount of years, I decided that I wanted a better life for myself and my children. Although, my husband did not choose to move towards a better life, I had no choice but to move on if I wanted to obtain a better way of life. It was hard, but with the help from the Lord and church members, I was able to complete four years of college. I obtained my teacher's certification and began teaching. I used my role as a parent to educate and encourage my own children in pursuing their education and to put priorities first so that they will be able to live a successful and prosperous life. My children are almost all grown now and are working toward success, but I have not given up that role. I use that same background knowledge that I have to encourage my students who may come from the same background as I did to change their mindset so that they too may be successful.

I have a wide range of religious dominations in my family. My father's mother came from a Mormon family. I have 2 catholic nuns in my mother's family along with a catholic priest and a Baptist minister. I have several members that attend non-denominational churches. This has given me a very wide view of religion and its practices.

Caregiving Practices-I come from a very large family. I am the youngest of 8 children. I am the one who the other's come to for caregiving. I guess it is my turn since they cared for me when I was a baby and in elementary school. I have watched 3 of my siblings die of cancer. I cared for them, bathed them, ect. I watched as my siblings mourned another that was taken from us suddenly by an unknown cause. I was the one who ordered the DNR order on our father, because the others could not. Caregiving comes from what is there, inside you, your strength.
