Cathy Greene is an Irish immigrant that came to America so she could start a new life and run a business to pull her weight in the new country. However she is very much disliking it. Her Family had not written any letters to her so she wanted to send one herself to see how they are keeping up. In the letter, Cathy explains that her business is failing, and feels she is useless to the world. She wishes to return home and see her family again.

The picture was taken in July 22, 1895 on board the SS Gallia which transported these Irish immigrants over to the United States. These people were seeking opportunities for a new urbanized life, full of jobs, and machines that make daily life easier. In the picture you can see a small child in a white dress inferring that they would want to start a family life. Many of these men are sophisticated businessman looking to start chasing after the American dream and start some sort of company. Many of these men and women applied for jobs in the coal mining, steel, and lumber industry and gradually climb up the occupational ladder.

This shows that when the irish came over to get new jobs and leave everything going wrong in ireland and europe it was still very hard to find a job because the irish didnt have much education and knowledge of how to do things and how things work. but it was still better then living in ireland because there wasnt as many illnesses and diseases and in ireland the irish barely had enough to pay for the trip to america.

Irish Immigration at Ellis Island (photo)

This photo is of immigrants coming into New york (Ellis Island) in 1904. This photo shows pull factors because some of the immigrants went to America to get out of their homeland to get new jobs, religious rights, more land and to help their family. They also wanted the "American Dream" (which was the jobs, the land, and the money) which dragged or pulled them into the new life they hoped to get for themselves and their families. The people are all crammed into the building to get that chance. The push factors that helped them want to get out of their home land were that they wanted to get out of their political and religious persecution, they also wanted a chance to get the pull factors listed above. This photo also captures just how many people were at the New York harbor at one time all trying to get what they wanted.

Anaconda Standard (Montana) April 17, 1909 Article written on Irish Immigration

is newspaper article (Anaconda Standard (Montana)) written on April 17, 1909 shows the factors of what happened to the immigrants after they were in America. They were already pulled for the new jobs, religious rights, more land, and hopefully a better life for their family, and then they were pushed out of their home town because of their political and religious persecutions, which means that they couldn't believe what they wanted without being judged. Now that they are in America it shows how what they were pulled there for what doesn't exist anymore they aren't being offered jobs anymore which means no land, and now they might not be able to help to support their family. This newspaper article really shows a different side of how the push pull factors aren't always helpful to the immigrants because sometimes they don't always work out.

Letter written by Mary Ann Rowe to friend back home

This diary written by Mary Ann Rowe on October 29, 1888 to her friend, which shows what she had to give up to get the life she wanted, and how she is homesick now and misses her family. The push factors were that she wanted to get away from her hometown. She also wanted to not forget about the past but to move on to achieve something greater. The pull factors were that America offered that chance to get away and to hopefully find somewhere to work and live. These factors all lead to Mary wanting to leave because of what she had been through and to hopefully start a new life somewhere else, but she still misses her family and friends through it all.
