I added this image because it was key to what was discussed in Module 1 reading. I have worked in large organizations for a little under 10 years and I never understood what different levels of management truly did until I read module 1 and read a breakdown of each level of managements responsibility. I am now able to recognize the roles of each level on management.

I added this image because primary manager roles were discussed. Team leaders is a manager role that I have held while working for a third party collections agency. I handled the Comcast portfolio and had a team of 15-18 full time employees at a time. I found this image interesting because it demonstrates how a team leader role is by including a tea, behind them and the team leader leading them.

Image origination: What New Team Leaders Should Know First | Partnership Employment

In module 2 we discussed ethical decision-making. This video talks about ethical decision-making in detail including examples. There are two approaches to ethical decision-making. This can be an individualistic approach or a communal approach. One example used in the attached link is the debate of legalization of drugs; advocates claim they have the individual right to do what they please and a communal approach is how legalization can affect the community. A question that can be asked should self-come before others.

When I think about employee diversity, I think of the organizations I have been a part of. Each organization has had diverse employees, ranging from different skill sets, education backgrounds, cultures, disabilities, veteran status, genders and religions. I was able to learn from people from all walks of life not just people with similar backgrounds.

In module 3 we discussed management within a global organization. In slide 5 of module 3's reading it was dedicated to the effects of cultural differences on global business. This section of the reading reminded me of a previous organization of where I worked. At this previous organization they had offices throughout Georgia, Florida and the Dominican Republic. The culture from the Georgia and Florida office was vastly different from the culture in the Dominican Republic office although we all supported the same cause. The culture, attire and environment in Dominican offices was more professional, in the states the culture was relaxed and casual.

Peter Drucker, the famed management expert, observed:

“Management is deeply embedded in culture. What managers do in Germany, in the United Kingdom, in the United States, in Japan, or in Brazil is exactly the same. How they do it may be quite different.”

This topic reminded me of my experience in the Dominican Republic where I visited American based businesses. Businesses like Taco Bell and McDonalds had plantains, bananas and dolce de leche desserts on their menu. These menu items are not available in the US however they are in the Dominican Republic because these are items known and commonly consumed by their Dominican consumers.

screenshot taken from: Taco Bell Lope De Vega a Domicilio ¡Pide Delivery! | PedidosYa

Module 4 discussed decision making. There are various decision-making methods such as decision based, evidence based, group decision-making and utilizing a decision tree amongst other options. A decision tree is a branched flowchart showing multiple pathways for potential decisions and outcomes. The tree starts with what is called a decision node, which signifies that a decision must be made. I can see a decision tree being used for how to choose a school, childcare, degree or a vacation spot.

Image located in module 4: decision making.

In modulke 4 we discussed different methods of planning. Michael Porter, a well-known business consultant and professor at Harvard University, identified five critical external factors that affect strategies being developed by organizations in any industry. Managers use the tool to examine opportunities and threats and to facilitate decision making in the context of their company’s external environment. Porters five forces can help assess the attractiveness of an industry, and pinpoint areas where one can adjust your strategy to improve profitability.

In module 5 we discussed organizational structure and processes. Managers are tasked with both creating and communicating a consistent organizational culture.

Organizational culture refers to the collective behavior of the people who make up an organization; this includes their values, visions, norms, working language, systems, symbols, beliefs, and habits. One of the reasons I left a previous company is because of the company culture. At my previous job there was no work/life balance, no room to grow into new roles and negative environment that included disrespect and drugs.

Image found in module 5.

In module 5 we also discuss employee empowerment. At the core of all of the trends in organizational structure is employee empowerment. Employee empowerment is to trust the employee’s ability and to give him or her the authority to make decisions. One of my favorite form of employee empowerment is the ability to work from home. Personally, working from home has afforded me more of a work/life balance, I get to be present for my child more, cut down on travel time, and I get to utilize my lunch break more efficiently by doing laundry or getting dinner started.

Informal employee development strategies include on the job training, Shadowing, and mentorship.

Module 7 discusses leadership and motivation. Feedback on a goal is an ongoing requirement to be aware of progression or regression. An employee will require feedback on how well he or she is progressing toward his or her goals. Feedback can help an employee determine what she has done and what she wants to do. In my experience, feedback has been given to me every quarterly and annual review. It is very important to have an open mind to feedback. Some people have a hard time accepting constructive criticism which makes it difficult to help them improve.

Transactional leadership reacts to problems as they arise, whereas transformational leadership is more likely to address issues before they become problematic. In my experience, it is good to be a transformational leader because you have more buy in and loyalty from your employees.

Module 8 discusses controlling performance and operations. Gantt charts display the duration of steps in a project and are used by project managers to track the time and sequence of each step. A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart developed by Henry Gantt to illustrate a project schedule. Gantt charts show the start and finish dates of the terminal and summary elements of a project. Gantt charts also display the expected duration of each stage of a project as well as the expected order of each stage. I can see a Gantt chart as a way to motivate team members and set realistic deadlines.

Once the company has a good understanding of its strengths and weaknesses, management is able to create a timeline of reachable objectives. It is important to create milestones for these objectives and identify which departments within the organization will be responsible for each one. Timelines are important because it can show visual of change overtime.
