The Iknife is a current innovative surgical tool. The Iknife is linked to nursing informatics because it is innovative technology used to improve clinical, financial and organizational performance. The successful translation of the iKnife has the potential to reduce the human costs and economic impact of reoperative breast surgery. Furthermore, there will be added value in limiting trauma, improving cosmetics and quality of life.

The Iknife is used to surgically cut as much cancerous tissue while doing minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. In the past, the only way to know if the tissue was cancerous or not was by using samples from a biopsy study. Taking samples from a cancerous tumor and sending it to pathology which is time consuming. Without the Iknife surgeons are unsure of the edge borders of the tumor to cut during surgery. Researchers have developed a surgical knife that instantly detects whether cells are cancerous or healthy. The Iknife works by analyzing the smoke caused by the vaporizing tissue being cut. The smoke is sucked up with a mass spectrometer, connected to the Iknife, that analyzes it and then blade burns through the cancerous tissue.

Hearing the diagnosis of cancer may cause a patient to experience a roller coaster range of emotions. These emotions entail feelings among which can include fear, stress, and anxiety. Cancer diagnosis has an impact on patients physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Treatment options for cancer diagnosis is chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Depending on the actual diagnosis the patient may receive concurrent options for treatment. Having a patient undergo surgery is very risky. To surgically cut on a patient and tell them after surgery there is a chance that not all of the cancerous tissue was taken out would be devastating. If a patient has a solid tumor and is able to have all of it surgically removed it can put the patient at ease. This is an amazing invention. Due to the Iknife after one surgical intervention the cancer patient may get to hear the words “you are cancer free.”

The advantage Iknife, is that it reduces blood loss, improving the surgeon’s field of view and the speed of the surgery. The iKnife can tell apart cancerous and non-cancerous cells during surgery in a matter of seconds.

This could help surgeons decide what to remove without having to wait for test results to come back from the lab, potentially sparing healthy tissue and making the surgery more accurate.

With the Iknife there is no need for taking tissue biopsy samples to pathology. This cuts down on surgical time and wait time for results from pathology.
