After a good amount of years, or in some cases even months, they blow their money and leave themself in a deep ditch. Some had quit their jobs given they had won all this money, and as such then they lose it all they're sort of, y'know, screwed. Most were just not ready to take such a large amount of money at once, and so in out of impulse they blow it all. After awhile of interesting work he gained enough money to buy a large mansion across the lake from her's. He throws parties, very large parties in hopes that Daisy would wander in, to which she does not.  When Nick Carroway moves in next to him, he begins to observe him, soon gaining his friendship. Nick is quite literally Gatsby's one true friend  by the end of the book.

Regarding his wealth,  there's rumors that he earned it via bootlegging, to which could be entirely true given he could've sold them through the drug stores that he owned.
