Use quotations and explain them. To score at least a 3, students would be wise to make use of pertinent references from the text. Encourage them to use specific quotations to back up their assertions. However, remind them that they must explain their quotes clearly and demonstrate how they are relevant to the question. It is important for young writers to realize that offering long quotes without explanation bogs down the essay and can give the undesirable impression that the student is trying to fill up space rather than answer the prompt!

Evidence 1: Lawrence uses the imagery of blood many times to indicate the harsh realities of farming and to contrast the environment of the urban side.
Analysis 1: Thus, the woman is characterized as powerless due to living in farm-buildings and fields, where one can only think about the agony that comes with farming. Her situation can be representative of the farming class in history, who are typically the lower class, having little influence over decisions with their only responsibility being to provide food for the masses. The woman wishes to have another form of life of being in the "world of cities and governments" where she can attain her aspirations by seeking to gain new found knowledge. However, because she is powerless, she “could never attain to” the freedom that is the other side of the world.
Evidence 2: By using the word “magic” to describe the land, Lawrence characterizes the woman as someone who is zealous to search for answers by discovering and learning.
Analysis 2: She questions herself numerous times with rhetorical questions in order to figure out what exactly she was lacking that kept her away from the land. Being kept away from this “magic land,” she wishes to explore her options and broaden her horizons. This proves that her vision of the world has been extremely restricted to the extent that cities, ordinary to the common man, seem mystical and mysterious to her eye from never being able to experience life outside of farms.

Evidence 1: “She stood to see the far-off world of cities and governments...the magic land to her, where secrets were made known and desires fulfilled.”
Analysis 1: Lawrence's employment of syndeton portrays the image of the woman rambling on about 'the far off world." Typically, this style is used when one is filled with excitement and wonder, such as the woman.
Evidence 2: “...whilst her husband looked out to the back at sky and harvest and beast and land, she strained her eyes to see what man had done in fighting outwards to knowledge…”
Analysis 2: This use of antithesis shows the contrasting wants of the man and woman. It captures the woman's situation which is that she is stuck in the front of her house.

“Her house faced out from the farm-buildings and fields, looked out to the church and Hall and the world beyond.” By the writer including this shows, how important the structure of the woman's household is to her. It also digs deep into the moral situation she believes in. It is apparent that the woman looks out into life with a positive perspective this is known because of how her house is faced looking out at the world beyond.

“Whereas the vicar, dark and dry and small beside her husband, had yet a quickness and a range of being that made Brangewen , in his large geniality, seem dull and local.” Because there are so many conjunctions used it shows that the writer has a bigger point to convey, revealing that the man is being controlled.

Evidence 1: “But the woman wanted another form of life than this, something that was not blood-intimacy. She craved to know. She craved to achieve this higher being, if not in herself, then in her children.”
Analysis 1: The woman wants better for herself, but most importantly better for her children. This quote shows readers her selflessness in the fact that she cared for her children's future. As a result, this makes the woman more appealing to the audience in the sense that it allows them to feel more comfortable with helping others.
Evidence 2: “She stood to see the far off world of cities and governments and the active scope of man, the magic land to her, where secrets were made known and desires fulfilled.”
Analysis 2: This quote sheds light on how the setting plays a major part in how the woman’s situation is shaped because it gives insight on the woman feels about the things that go on beyond the farm. Also the setting signifies the woman’s desire to search for a better life outside the farm.

Evidence 1: The woman could control what was beyond, while the Brangwen men choose to close their backs to the “teeming life of creation.”
Analysis 1: It’s to show how the Brangwen men were happy to be where they are, while the woman wants to be different by exploring different places.
Evidence 2: She is starting to have more optimistic for children than herself because “which makes a man strong even if he be little.”
Analysis 2: It’s important that she acknowledges that she may not be able to explore places and become knowledgeable, because when her children are older enough they will at least be able to know what it’s.
