Directions--As we read the novel, be sure to answer the questions. You can just get to the point with your answer for this box.
Due by Wed., May 1=question 1
1. Use chp 3, pg 29, read 1st full paragraph and answer--What does this detail suggest about the role of the announcements in Jonas’s community? Be specific and support your answer.
YOUR ANSWER--(Author vp)= to publicly shame people, so they obey the rules. The Speaker makes announcements to inform the people of the community of wrongdoings, events, and dangers.

2. Jonas’s community is highly regulated with rules. Read the sections about the rule against bragging (34). Answer and support-- What is the rule’s purpose in the community? Why does it exist? What impact does the rule have on the community?
YOUR ANSWER-- The rules purposes where to make a perfect community without making any mistakes. In order to have a perfect community, you always need to follow the rules and not break them. If a person broke the rules, they would release them or make them apologize. Also, the rules purpose where to not make people brag, or they will receive a consequence (punishment). This rule makes it equal in the community.

3. Which narrative point of view (POV) is used in The Giver? Use pg 67 to support your answer with text evidence with the sentence from the novel that proves the POV you chose.
YOUR ANSWER--
Third person limited because on pg 66-67, the author writes, " Jonas was certainly glad that that Assignment was taken..."

QUESTION #4--DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 8.
Use p. 82: How does Jonas feel upon leaving the auditorium? Which words make you think that? (support your answer)
YOUR ANSWER--
I would say Jonas is confused and scared, nervous, because in page 72 the chief elder skipped Jonas and kept going. Then, finally she called him up to be the Receiver Of Memory.

QUESTION #5
How has Jonas’s attitude shifted slightly in chapter twelve? Make sure to explain your answer using details from the text. Use chapter 12. HINT-Keep this in mind as you think about a new symbol to symbolize Jonas in the Middle of the Novel.

YOUR ANSWER-- His attitude is shifting, because of all the questions of why the community would remove this. Jonas is different because of his job from all the memories that the giver gave him, because of that he is more eager to receive more memories from the giver. Jonas is honored with his job, because of all the memories. '

QUESTION #6
1. Click the link and watch the video either together or on your own.
2. Answer the following questions with your group. Be sure to support your response.
A. Define a protagonist & give an example from the video or from a story you know.
YOUR ANSWER
Protagonist-- central character in a story.
Antagonist-- opposing force or character who leads the conflict against the protagonist.

B. Define an antagonist & give an example from the video or from a story you know.
YOUR ANSWER
Example--
Three little pigs---Story---
The 3 little pigs are the protagonists, and the big bad wolf is the antagonist.

C. In The Giver, who is the protagonist and antagonist? Support your answer. Be sure to go over terms and explain pro & ant are not always people.
YOUR ANSWER
The protagonist is Jonas because he is the central character, and he is going through changes. The antagonist is the way of the community functions, and the rules of the community, because as Jonas gains wisdom, Jonas starts to see the community as an empty feeling, less unfair, that they do not want pain, colors, hills, and more. Jonas is going against that. He wants colors or hills or snow.

Protagonist- Jonas

Antagonist-The Community

The climax to the story to me, was the part when Jonas saw a video of the releasing of a twin baby and he knew what releasing meant. Then the most POPCORN MOMENT was when the father was the one who released the twin baby!!! My reaction was sad, frustrated and shocked because Jonas has been lied to by his own parents! There was this quote that even shocked me even more, "He killed it! My father killed it!" Jonas shocked me when he said that because I thought that the mom and father were very nice trusting parents. It turns out I was wrong. The quote connects with the climax by how the father released a twin baby and how Jonas is shocked and scared by what he did.
(pg 184-189)

The story was solved when The Giver and Jonas came up with a plan for Jonas to escape in Utopia ever since he saw the releasing video. However, Jonas's family was going to release Gabriel because Gabriel was crying all night and the night crew could not handle it so that's why he was gonna be released first thing in the morning. Jonas had to go escape early and save Gabriel. So Gabriel and Jonas left together and Jonas and Gabriel made it to Elsewhere. Or is it Elsewhere? A song that represents the resolution in The Giver, for me, is million ways by Elissia Mariah. I picked this song because this song can describe emotions, thoughts, words and time on how Jonas is feeling or how the plan needs to work out and be perfect ever since he saw the releasing video. This is why I picked the song Million Ways.
