This is a story about a boy called Michael. Michael’s parents buy a yacht and take him off to sail around the world. In a severe storm, Michael is washed overboard.

Michael wakes to find himself on the shore of a remote island with nothing but his clothes and his dog Stella Artois. Michael thinks he is all alone but soon discovers differently.

Kensuke also lives on the island. He is a former Japanese soldier. He survived the Second World War and the bombing of Hiroshima, but his family perished.

An extraordinary bond forms between the two and Kensuke has to face the decision to give up the life he has built up for himself on the island and help Michael to be reunited with his parents. His own experiences help him decide.

Eventually, I fell silent and my legs just would not kick anymore. I clung to my football, my head drifting to sleep. I knew I must not but I could not help myself. My hands kept slipping off the ball. I was fast losing my strength.

Task 1 :

Answer the following questions after reading the passage

How would you feel in Michael’s situation?

Do you have a special toy or object like Eddie's football that you'd take with you on a trip around the world? If you do, write a couple of sentences describing it and why it is special?

Passage 2 :

'We will be alright ', I told Stella. Mum and Dad, they will come back for us there bound to. They will. They will. You'll get better and they'll come back. she won't leave us there. she'll find us. You'll see. 

Literacy task :

Imagine you are Michael’s Mum and Dad when they discover Michael has fallen overboard. How would you feel?

Write a short description about what might have happened on the boat after Michael fell in from Mum or Dad’s point of view.
