Significance of Music

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that takes place in the 1920's. Within the book are songs, some of which are jazz pieces. One probably expects Fitzgerald's inclusion of jazz in the book, however it has a greater symbolic meaning than just being the music of the time. "Instead jazz... resonates with those elements of the narrative that threaten to disturb the unity of the society depicted..." (Beuka 4). This quote from Robert Beuka's essay about The Great Gatsby shows that the symbolism of jazz in the book is to represent the changes in society, expectations, and morals that occurred in the 1920's. However a changing America is not the only deeper meaning behind the songs in the book. After analysis, each song's lyrics, context in the book, and reason for being included can yield more symbolism.

Context- Jordan Baker is explaining Gatsby's life and his past with Daisy as girls in the background sing this song. Jordan says, '"Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay."' (78).

Rationale- This song is included to help the reader realize how much Gatsby longs for Daisy. The song goes, "I'm the Sheik of Araby. Your love belongs to me. At night when you're asleep into your tent I'll creep..." (Reinhardt). Metaphorically, Gatsby is the 'Sheik of Araby' and Daisy's love belongs to him. The tent that he will creep into is the Buchanan household. He intends to 'rescue' Daisy from Tom so that they can be together.

Context- Klipspringer plays this song on the piano while Gatsby gives Daisy a tour of his house. The tour takes place right after Nick has the two over to his house for a secret reunion. The reunion goes well and both Gatsby and Daisy are elated to be in each other's company again.

Rationale- Fitzgerald included this song to make reference to Gatsby's and Daisy's current situation. "The rich get richer," is supposed to represent Gatsby. (Whiting). At this point in his life he is very rich. There is also no foreseeable reason for him to lose his money. Therefore, he will get richer as time passes. The other part of the song, "the poor get--children," signifies Daisy's current situation. (Whiting). Her marriage with Tom is obviously a poor one. The fruit of her poor marriage is a child named Pammy. The next line is, "In the meantime, in between time..." (Whiting). This signifies that though their situations are not similar, they can still be with each other in between the responsibilities of their lives.

"Three O'Clock in the Morning" -Julián Robledo and Dorothy Terriss (Waltz)

Context- As Nick walks Daisy to her car after her first party at Gatsby's, "Her glance left me [Nick] and sought the lighted top of the steps, where Three O'Clock in the Morning, a neat, sad little waltz... was drifting out the open door." (108).

Rationale- Fitzgerald included this song to show the fantastic dynamic between Gatsby and Daisy. The pair dance together at the party and Nick notices that, "except for the half hour she'd been alone with Gatsby she wasn't having a good time." (106). The song goes, "Just one more waltz with you, That melody so entrancing, Seems to be made for us two, I could just keep on dancing forever dear with you." (Robledo). These lyrics show that Gatsby and Daisy have a serious attraction to each other and wish to remain dancing and having fun forever. The song continues with, "Sounds like an old sweet love tune, Say that there soon will be a honeymoon." (Robledo). This represents Gatsby's request of Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him. He wants her to do it so that they can get married and then 'have a honeymoon' like the song says.

Rationale- This song is about a man who desperately needs a certain woman. He says, "I can't get enough, Addicted and I'm dying for a hit of your love." (Band). This is just like Gatsby, who bought a house just to be closer to Daisy. Gatsby, like the man in the song, is willing to do whatever he has to so that he can get the girl he desperately needs.

Rationale- Young's song is about a man and woman spending a night together. The man knows that things would not end well if he stay at the woman's house but he wants to. The man says, "But what if I stay wrapped up in your arms
'Cause lovin' you baby's been pretty perfect so far." (Young). This is similar to Gatsby's perfect love of Daisy. Both Gatsby and Daisy wish to stay together and 'wrapped up in each other's arms' after the party is over.

Rationale- This song is about a man and a woman who had a young love but life go in the way and broke them apart. This situation is similar to Gatsby and Daisy's because they too had a young love but were forced apart. Urban sings, "Right back to when we had it made... Out of nowhere it slipped away... I think about all those summer nights... But I just can't let it go." (Urban). Due to their current situations, Daisy and Gatsby can't be together but wish they could be. This is similar to the man in the song who longs for and reminisces about his young love.
