He was born into a royal family and most of his early life consisted of traditions within his tribe and education at a Methodist school. Mandela believed education was important and began night school at the University of South Africa. After the course, Mandela studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was there, where he experienced racism due to being the only black student at the school. This caused him to be very involved with campaigns against racism, which led him later on to be arrested for conspiracy to overthrow the state in 1962. His sentence was initially for life, but he ended up serving 27 years. After serving his sentence, he continued to fight for rights in South Africa and served as President of South Africa for 5 years, 1994-1999. His late years mainly consisted of speaking out on racial matters and political issues.
