The word "realism" refers to a movement about art and literature of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Realism is literature that emerged in the early 1830's that shows life as it really is. It focuses on the ordinary lives and adventures of a common person. It is also the attempt to represent things truthfully while excluding supernatural elements. In the 19th century, European artists adopted the new style of art, Realism. This art movement transformed the western world of art. In literature, Realism is almost shown in every single work. This is because readers need to recognize and identify the characters and their surroundings in writings.

2. What did Realism emerge from?

Realism was a response to Romanticism's super-naturalism and emotion and began from the rejection of Romanticism. Since it was a rejection of Romanticism, it excluded supernatural events from the Gothic literature in Romanticism. Realism first showed in novels and stories where characters had backgrounds and their lives were more descriptive. Artists wanted to break away from the regular artistic styles of the past. So they created objective, unemotional pieces where imaginative was the main focus. Their works typically showed ordinary, or lower working class, people instead of heroic, historic, biblical, or royal people. They also showed scenes of ordinary lives, such as landscapes with farmers working. The realists wanted to show how they felt about the humble people having simple lives.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain’s novel about his childhood in Hannibal, Missouri. Huckleberry, who grows up before the Civil War, not only accepts slavery, but believes that helping a slave run away is a sin.

The two main themes of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are slavery and racism. The story sets place around the Civil War which was when slavery still existed. Since slavery existed and the story was written during Mark Twain's childhood, it talks about slavery. Mark Twain’s depicts slavery as a representation of the condition of blacks in the United States even after the abolition of slavery. Because of this, Mark Twain was considered a racist even though he didn't intend to be. The story talks about Huckleberry running away with a slave and deciding whether or not to contact his owner. By saying his owner, we could conclude that the slave had a white owner. This represents the times of racism and slavery back in the day.
