Tone Paragraph

The tone changes several times in chapters 9 through 11 of Frankenstein because of the events occurring in the chapters, the actions of characters, and dialogue. The setting also plays an important role in determining the tone and mood of the story, as it influences how characters feel in a certain place and time. First off, Victor begins feeling melancholy and hopeless in chapter 9 after Justine has been executed, as he feels he is responsible for what happened and is grieving for the loss he has experienced. Victor changes the tone of the story slightly in chapter 10, when he travels to the summit of Montanvert, in hopes of cheering himself up and giving him some hope for himself and his family. In this way, the tone of hope is influenced by both the setting and the characters within the chapter. When Victor sees the creature he created and talks with him, the tone is somewhat frightening but then turns lonesome, as the creature begins telling his story and how he ended up alone and secluded in the cave on the mountain. The tones and moods of remorse, hope, and loneliness in chapters 9 through 11 of Frankenstein influence the overall story because they contribute to characterization, setting, and themes within the novel, such as finding solitude and peace in nature and how feelings of guilt can affect a person and their actions. These various tones also help readers to understand the events within the story better and help to explain the actions of characters with more detail and emotion.
