Before the Civil War Many of the plantations before the war held many families of slave up to ten or twelve per plantation. Many slaves had different jobs varying from, farm hands, shoe makers, blacksmiths, and care takers for animals. Most of the farms were planted with cotton and the slaves spent most their days harvesting. Their homes were made out of logs and woods floors and bunks made of straw. Depending on their master, the slaves food rations were big or small. Andy Anderson once stated,"After that whippin', I didn't have my heart in the work for the master. If I saw some cattle in the corn field, I turned my back instead of chasin' them out. I guess the master saw that I wouldn't be depended on and that's maybe the reason he sold me to his brother, John"(Anderson).

After the Civil War took place reconstruction was set in motion. Many former slaves wondered where they would go once they were emancipated. In 1865, General Sherman tried to give emancipated slaves land in the coastal areas and islands in Georgia and South Carolina by promising "40 acres in a mule" (Jennifer Condon). Without getting any land they would have to be hired or starve from no crop production. If they were lucky to get land they formed all black communities. "It was a community born out of slavery" (Reese).

During the Civil War they would hide in the brush in the daylight hours and at night when they saw someone coming they would hide till they passed. After a few months into the war at night, they would stay in "Dog Tents" which provided them little protection. They would make their own blankets with buttons and cloth. To protect themselves from the wet ground they would use a rubberized blanket. Many slaves didn't know there age until after the civil war. When James Green just got to the camp he didn't get to do anything he said ," I didn't get to eat. I was told to carry water for the stock". (James Green) If any of the slaves would try and run away there would be dogs to come and find them and take them back.
