The distinctive characteristics of Balinese dancing are as follows:
1. Balinese dancing is very expressive, through the use of mimicry and eye-movements. The movements are referred to in Bali by the term nyledet. Especially, even in the whole of Indonesia, such energetic eye-movements are found only in Balinese dancing.

2. Most Balinese dances are in harmony with the powerful and pointed music(gamelan). Each movement in Balinese dancing, such as movements of the eyes, the head, the hand, the shoulder, the legs are in keeping with the rhythm of the beating of the gamelan.

3. The position of the legs is usually open and low, even to the point of squatting in most dances though in others, the legs are very straight.
4. The position of the arms is open and lifted to demonstrate a calm yet powerful role.

The Kabuki dance dates back to the early 17th century, when a female dancer named Okuni achieved popularity with parodies of Buddhist prayers. She assembled around her a troupe of wandering female performers who danced and acted. Okuni’s Kabuki was the first dramatic entertainment of any importance that was designed for the tastes of the common people in Japan. The sensuous character of the dances proved to be too disruptive for the government, and in 1629, it banned women from performing. Young boys dressed as women performed the programs in their place, but this type of Kabuki was suppressed in 1652 again, because of concern for morals. Finally, older men took over the roles, and it is this form of all-male entertainment that has endured to the present day. Kabuki plays grew in sophistication, and the acting became more subtle. Eventually, by the early 18th century, Kabuki had become an established art form made of dramatic presentation of genuinely moving situations. As merchants and other commoners in Japan began to rise on the social and economic scale, Kabuki, as the people’s theatre, provided a vivid commentary on contemporary society

Bharatanatyam Dance

The movements of Bharatanatyam are unique. They share elements with other classical Indian dances, but aren’t found in any western dance style. Bharatanatyam is dynamic and energetic; it is also precise and balanced. The basic postures center the weight of the dancer, and there is little use of the hips or off-balance positions. Bharatanatyam has a variety of characteristic movements. Along with the rhythmic stamping of the feet, there are jumps, pirouettes, and positions where the knees contact the floor. Performed by an expert dancer, these movements flow together gracefully. An exceptional feature of Bharatanatyam is the movements of the eyes, which complement and highlight the movements of the body. Every part of the body is involved in the dance, and their movements are defined and classified in this system of dance.
