1. The United States eventually joined the war because they were a major exporter of goods in the world, and many of their goods went to Europe which meant that they were supplying other countries war efforts. Also, German submarines were destroying American ships, so America had to respond and do something about it. On top of that, Germany tried to get Mexico to invade America with the Zimmermann Telegram which angered the United States. I think that it was the right decision because the American economy was being affected by the war, so they couldn't just sit back and let that happen.

2. It is okay for government to take away our rights in times of crisis to a certain extent because it is important to maintain security and order. In order to maintain security and order like the Espionage and Sedition, sometimes the government has to limits people's freedoms. For example, these two acts were put in place in order to prevent the spread of military information and false information; however, I feel that the Espionage act was better than the Sedition Act.

3. I think that women and African Americans may have seen this as ironic because democracy was supposed to be by the people and for the people; however, African Americans and women still didn't have the right to vote along with other things that they needed in order to be truly equal to whites and men. Segregation was also taking place in America at this time which many people would have seen as not democratic, so these groups of people would have thought that America should focus its attention internally to make sure that it was completely democratic before they started to focus on other nations.

4. The influenza pandemic affected American life because people would have been worried about contracting it whenever they went about especially since it was found in almost all training camps, and many people contracted and died from it especially younger people that you would expect to be in good health since it mutated. This make me think about the Covid-19 pandemic that we are currently in because it continues to be present in our everyday lives to the point that it hinders some people from going out or taking certain precautions. Covid-19 has also mutated into different strands multiple times just like how influenza mutated.

1. The United States had alliances that eventually led them to end World War I. The fight for the coding and decoding system known as Zimmerman's telegram was the final push for the United States to join the war. I believe it was the right decision. I feel it would have hurt the United States more economically and caused more issues with allinances if the United States didn't join the war.
2. The First Amendment gives the people a voice. In it it states how people have freedom of speech. Many believe that the reason why it is the first amendment is because its the most important. I do not feel it is okay for the government to take away rights especially in times of crisis. Times of crisis are when the body of the people should be listened to the most.
3. Women and African Americans didn't look at America as a true democracy because there voice wasn't being heard. They were unable to vote and were not equal. The only voices being heard, were the same ones that have always been. Rich white men were the only ones experiencing true democracy, who were also the ones deciding to enter The Great War.
4. The feeling of fear and worry spread among people as influenza spreads among towns and camps. This is like the Covid-19 pandemic that we are experiencing currently. With lots of unknown and precautions being taken America can look different than the years before.

1. I feel that one of the main reasons that the United States joined World War 1 is because of the ties they had to all of the countries in the war. America has a large economy and it relies on countries like the UK and Russia to buy and sell goods. This meant that in order to keep their good relationship with these countries they would eventually need to get involved. What truly pushed America over the edge and made the public want to get in on the war, was the Zimmerman Telegram. Germany hoped to bring Mexico into the conflict in order to distract America from the real war at hand. America had found itself tangled up within the war, and now the only thing that they had to do was announce that they were joining the war.
2. I don't think that it is okay for the government to take away our constitutional rights. In times of crisis the government may feel that they need to restrict the public but this doesn't mean that a right that is provided in the First Amendment should be taken away. If this right is able to be taken away, then how much power does the government truly have? Taking away the voice from the general population takes even more power out of their hands and there comes a point where the government becomes too strong. If the Espionage or Sedition Acts were to be passed today I don't think they would go over well.
3. I suppose that the women and African Americans in our country may have felt disrespected if America entered The Great War to preserve democracy. America as a nation was yet to provide complete equality for women and African Americans, but it was willing to go to war to fight for another countries democracy. Women and African Americans were being oppressed at the time and instead of facing that issue, the nation decided to insert itself into another issue. Women were working in factories and doing more than ever before to prove that they deserved equal rights, and African Americans were still waiting for the equality they had always deserved. Once The Great War ended, women and African American rights should have been a priority rather than facing the issue years later.
4. The high death rate of the Influenza pandemic sent a lot of people into a panic. The virus was able to adapt to infect different people and it stuck around for more than one year. This caused tons of economic problems and working problems. This is extremely similar to the problems we had regarding Covid-19 and the way that people were scared to work. We are still dealing with many people that are unemployed and the government is doing much about this problem.

Germany sank many American merchant ships around the British Isles which prompted the American entry into the war. This was not the only reason but it is one of the main causes for America joining World War 1.

Taking our rights away during a time of crisis is honestly a power grab. When the government takes your rights it’s because they usually fear what you can do with them. Taking away your citizens rights is a fearful move done to procure the government’s safety.

Some would be for it, some against it, you’ll never have a solid party to agree on things. For all we know they could’ve been people outraged at the idea of democracy being a central hold of government while others would be pleased or even delighted.

The Influenza pandemic cause mass histera much like Covid and we have similar features. I.E people refusing to care for themselves and others people making theories and blaming the government, theories about population control, ect. People are naturally suspicious and there is no one way to hold so no matter the time period there will be skepticism.

1. There were around three main reasons for the U.S.'s involvement in WWI. One being the Zimmerman Telegram, where Germany sent a coded message to Mexico to launch an attack on the U.S. in order to prevent the U.S. from getting involved in the already ongoing world war. Two being that Germany had already been attacking U.S. submarines and merchant ships causing trouble with trading and transportation of goods. Finally, the U.S. had trade and other relations with some of the countries involved making it another cause to fight in the war. I would say it was the right decision in the end, though the 8 million plus losses was a heavy price to pay, it would somewhat weaken the powers of Germany and the Allies aided by the U.S. won, helping the U.S. politically and even somewhat economically.
2. I would say it is okay to limit the rights of citizens in times of crisis. It is much harder to deal with a crisis if your entire population is in an uproar and fighting you every step of the way on how you are handling a crisis. Even though we are allowed certain unalienable rights by the government, they are the ones who originally gave them to us, so by all right they can also take them away, which if absolutely necessary, I am fine with if it means a crisis is resolved in the end.
3. Considering at the time woman and African Americans were still not considered really "equals" by society what with woman not being allowed to vote until 1920 and the Civil Rights movement still being decades out, they were still making strides to improve their standing in society. Woman just 2 years after the war would be able to vote and the persistent protest of equal treatment of African Americans would lead to The Civil Rights movement a few short decades later. I would supposed these two groups would be for the preservation of democracy as in time, they would get the same treatment and rights of that of the white man.
4. People we constantly terrified, over half a million dying in the U.S. alone made people unsure of anything and everything. Not having the luxuries of today's convenience to have contact free delivery and receiving of essential supplies, every trip to the store to get food was a risk of death in retrospect or going anywhere else for an essential good or service. This reminds me of what the world is currently going through now with Covid.

1. The main reason the United states entered WWI was because of their ties to the other countries. They had multiple alliances that they were major exports for and that led them down that path. I think that joining the war was the right decision for us because of the alliances that we were already in. If we would have stayed neutral and not shown our support it would have hurt us and the ties we had in the end.
2. I do not think that it is okay for the government to take away the rights that we are promised, especially in times of crisis. This can cause the people to panic or rebel and that would be worse. The 1st Amendment promises the people that they have a voice, and they will be heard.
3. The voices and opinions of women and African Americans were not being heard so they do not view American as a true democracy. They were not able to vote and definitely not seen as equal. The rich, white, property owning men where the only ones getting their voice heard, so they were the ones experiencing a democracy.
4. Since the Influenza pandemic had such a high death rate, it sent a lot of the population into a panic. The virus came in differently for different people, and it lasted longer. There were economic problems because of this. In my mind, this is almost spot on with what happened with covid. People were scared to go to work or go out in public so online shopping was the only thing being benefited. Even with that there were shortages because the ones who were scared to work couldn't make things in the factories that they worked in.
